National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) JRF Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post
The National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar), an Institute of National Importance in Assam, has released Advertisement No. NITS/Dean(R&C)/Chemistry/717/01/2026 for 1 Junior Research Fellow position in the Department of Chemistry. The role is attached to an Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) sponsored project titled "Rational Computational Engineering of Chiral Frustrated Lewis Pairs for High-Efficiency Asymmetric Imine Hydrogenation" (Project Sanction No. ANRF/ECRG/2025/002592/CS), led by Principal Investigator Dr. Shanti Gopal Patra, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. The position runs for 3 years, with extensions based on annual performance review, and the JRF role moves up to a Senior Research Fellow (SRF) with a higher salary in the third year. The Institute has full discretion to restrict the number of candidates called for interview based on screening, and reserves the right not to fill the post if no suitable candidate is found. Frustrated Lewis pairs are combinations of molecules that can activate and transform small molecules like hydrogen gas without needing a costly metal catalyst, making this an active and eco-friendly area of modern chemistry research with growing industrial interest.
Who Can Apply?
NIT Silchar has kept the eligibility criteria straightforward for this JRF post, focusing on your Chemistry background and NET/GATE qualification rather than prior job experience, so recent postgraduates are welcome to apply.
- Qualification: M.Sc. in Chemistry or BS-MS in Chemistry
- Mandatory: A valid NET (National Eligibility Test) or GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) qualification
- Desirable: Basic knowledge of physical/theoretical chemistry; prior knowledge of DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations is an advantage but not compulsory
- Relaxation: SC, ST, OBC, Women, and PwD candidates get relaxation in the minimum qualification requirement as well, as per Government of India rules
Age Limit
- You should be up to 28 years old to apply for this JRF post.
- Age Relaxation: SC, ST, OBC, women, and PwD candidates get age relaxation as per Government of India rules.
Salary
This is a consolidated monthly fellowship amount, common for JRF/SRF positions funded through central research grants like ANRF, rather than a fixed government pay scale.
- You will get Rs. 37,000 per month as JRF for the first two years, rising to Rs. 42,000 per month as SRF in the third year.
- HRA at 10% is paid on top of this if the Institute does not provide accommodation.
Selection Process (No Written Exam)
NIT Silchar will select candidates in two stages:
- Screening of Applications: The Institute may restrict the number of candidates called for interview based on this screening. This step also checks that you meet the essential and desirable qualifications listed in the notification.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the date, time, and venue directly, so keep your email and phone number active after applying.
If you are already employed, bring a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer to the interview. Selected candidates must also sign an agreement with the Institute at the time of joining, since the post is fully project-based and funded by ANRF. Since applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the post is filled, the number of candidates called for each round of interviews may vary depending on how many people have applied by that point.
How to Apply
There is no online portal for this fellowship — you apply directly to the Principal Investigator by email and post. Follow these steps carefully, since an incomplete application or missing documents can lead to rejection at the screening stage:
- Download the prescribed application format from the official notification.
- Fill in your personal details, educational qualifications from Class X onwards, and NET/GATE examination details.
- Mention any prior work experience, including the organization, post held, and nature of duty.
- Prepare an updated CV and attach self-attested photocopies of all certificates.
- Email the scanned application form, CV, and documents to shanti@che.nits.ac.in.
- Also send a hard copy of the filled application with CV and documents by post to the Principal Investigator, Department of Chemistry, NIT Silchar, Assam-788010.
Applications received by 21 July 2026 will get priority consideration, but the position stays open until it is filled, so apply as soon as you can.
