The Gauhati High Court (High Court of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh) has released Advertisement No. HC.XXXVII-07/2026/76/R.Cell dated 18 March 2026 for the temporary engagement of 3 Law Clerks at the Principal Seat in Guwahati. Practicing advocates and candidates with professional legal experience will get preference during selection. If you hold a Law degree from a recognized Indian university and have a valid Employment Exchange registration in Assam, this is a great opportunity to work closely with High Court judges.

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must be a Graduate in Law (LLB), Post Graduate in Law (LLM), or hold a Doctorate in Law from any recognized university in India.
  • Preference: Candidates practicing at the Bar or having professional experience or literary works in Law will get preference.
  • Employment Exchange: You must possess a valid Employment Exchange Number registered in the State of Assam.

You must hold the required qualification as on the last date of submitting the online application (05 April 2026).

Age Limit

  • Unreserved (UR): Maximum 40 years
  • OBC/MOBC: Maximum 43 years
  • SC/ST(P)/ST(H): Maximum 45 years
  • PwBD: Age relaxation as per rules

Salary

  • Selected Law Clerks will receive a fixed monthly pay of Rs. 30,000 (Rupees Thirty Thousand only).
  • The engagement is purely contractual and temporary in nature.
  • Initial tenure is 2 years, which can be extended by 1 more year.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in 2 stages:

  1. Written Examination (Stage-I): Objective type multiple choice questions on OMR sheets. Total 120 marks in 2 hours. Covers English (30 marks), General Knowledge (10 marks), General Aptitude (10 marks), Law (50 marks), and Assamese Language (20 marks). You must score at least 40% in the Assamese section (8 out of 20) to qualify, but Assamese marks are not counted in the merit list.
  2. Interview/Viva-Voce (Stage-II): Carries 30 marks. Candidates are called in the ratio of 1:3 based on written exam merit. You must score at least 60% in the interview (18 out of 30) to qualify.

The final merit list is prepared by adding Stage-I and Stage-II marks together. If two candidates get the same total, the one with higher written exam marks gets preference. If that is also equal, the older candidate gets preference.

  • Prepare case summaries, legal briefs, and reference notes for court proceedings
  • Review and analyze legal documents, petitions, and case records
  • Draft opinions, orders, and judgments under the guidance of judges
  • Research relevant statutes, precedents, and legal authorities for ongoing matters
  • Maintain confidentiality of all court proceedings and judicial deliberations
  • Follow the code of conduct as prescribed by the Gauhati High Court notification dated 02-11-2024

Exam Pattern

The written exam will have 120 marks in total. You will get 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete it. The exam is objective type (MCQ) on OMR sheets.

Subject-wise Breakdown

Final Merit: Written Exam marks (Stage-I) + Interview marks (Stage-II). Tiebreaker: higher written exam marks, then seniority in age.
