Gauhati High Court (GHC) Stenographer Grade-II Recruitment 2026 - 35 Posts
Gauhati High Court (GHC), the High Court of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, has released a notification for 35 Stenographer Grade-II posts in the District Courts of Assam. This recruitment is open to citizens of India as defined under Articles 5 and 6 of the Constitution of India. The number of vacancies shown is indicative only and may vary at the time of final selection. This is a solid opportunity for graduates with shorthand and typing skills to join the state judiciary in a permanent government role.
Who Can Apply?
- Qualification: You must be a graduate from a UGC recognized university as on the date of advertisement.
- Stenography Diploma: You need a Diploma/Certificate in stenography/shorthand from an ITI, Polytechnic or other recognized institute. Candidates currently pursuing the course can also apply but must submit the completion certificate at the time of document verification, unless the High Court decides otherwise.
- Language: You must have adequate knowledge of Assamese, the official language of Assam.
- Domicile: You need a valid Employment Exchange registration number for the state of Assam.
- Marital Status Clause: You are not eligible for appointment if you have entered into or contracted a marriage with a person having a living spouse, or if you have a living spouse and contracted another marriage.
- If you are already working in Government or Semi-Government service, you can still apply, but you must intimate your employer and upload a No Objection Certificate (NOC) at the time of applying, and a Release Order at the time of appointment.
Age Limit
- You should be between 18 and 40 years old (Unreserved category) as on the last date of receipt of applications.
- Age Relaxation: OBC/MOBC candidates can apply up to 43 years, SC candidates up to 45 years, ST(P)/ST(H) candidates up to 45 years, and PwBD candidates up to 50 years.
Salary
- Selected candidates will get a salary of Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 97,000 per month plus Grade Pay of Rs. 9,700.
- You will also get other allowances as applicable under the rules.
Application Fee
- Unreserved / OBC / MOBC: Rs. 500
- SC / ST(P) / ST(H): Rs. 250
- PwBD: No fee
The fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances, and it will not be held in reserve for any other examination or selection.
Selection Process
- Stenography Test: Includes a voice test before dictation (2 minutes), a shorthand speed test at 100 words per minute for 100 marks (7 minutes of dictation), 3 minutes of computer setup time, and 25 minutes for transcription on computer.
- Written Test: Candidates 10 times the number of vacancies who score at least 30 marks in the stenography test are called. It is a 70-mark OMR-based objective exam of 1.5 hours covering English Language Proficiency (50 marks) and Assamese (20 marks, qualifying only — you need 40% in each segment to pass).
- Viva-Voce (Interview): Candidates 3 times the number of vacancies, in order of stenography test merit, are called for a 10-mark interview.
Final merit is based on the total marks scored in the Stenography Test and Viva-Voce. In case of a tie, the candidate with more marks in the stenography test gets preference, followed by seniority in age. Simply meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee a call for any stage — the Gauhati High Court reserves the right to fix or alter the cut-off marks at each stage, and no TA/DA is paid for appearing in any test or interview.
Your admission to each stage is purely provisional. If it is found at any time — before or after the selection process — that you do not meet the eligibility criteria, your candidature will be cancelled without notice, even if an admit card or call letter has already been issued. A provisional list of candidates with roll numbers for each post will be published on the High Court website for your reference.
