Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Senior Private Secretary & Private Secretary Recruitment 2026 - 42 Posts

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), under the Ministry of Law & Justice, has released a vacancy circular for 42 posts — 22 Senior Private Secretary and 20 Private Secretary — to fill existing and anticipated vacancies at its Benches across the country. Selected candidates can be posted at any ITAT Bench in India, and if you apply for both posts, a single application and a single exam covers both — your final post depends on your rank in the merit list. This is a solid opportunity for graduates with strong shorthand and typing skills who want a stable Group B Gazetted government job.

  • Senior Private Secretary: 22 posts (SC: 1, ST: 5, OBC: 4, EWS: 5, General: 7) — includes 3 horizontal vacancies for PwBD candidates
  • Private Secretary: 20 posts (SC: 5, ST: 2, OBC: 0, EWS: 3, General: 10) — includes 2 horizontal vacancies for PwBD candidates

The number of vacancies may increase further as more posts get revived, and the category-wise split may change accordingly.

Selection Process

ITAT will select candidates through 3 stages:

  1. Written Examination: Paper-1 General English (100 marks — essay of at least 250 words, letter writing, precis writing, grammar) and Paper-2 General Knowledge & Reasoning (100 marks — GK/GS, logical reasoning, current affairs). The exam is in English medium only.
  2. Skill Test (100 marks): English Shorthand at 120 WPM and English Typing at 45 WPM. Only candidates who clear the written exam's qualifying marks get their skill test evaluated.
  3. Personal Interview (75 marks): Only candidates shortlisted after the skill test are called for interview.

Qualifying Marks: General category candidates need 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate; OBC/EWS need 35% and 45%; SC/ST/PwBD need 30% and 40%.

The written exam and skill test will be held at 9 centers — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. You can choose 2 preferred centers, though ITAT may cancel a center if it does not get enough applications and reassign you to your second choice. Selected candidates will be on probation for 2 years from the date of joining, and the appointing authority's decision on eligibility and selection will be final.

Applications that are incomplete, missing self-attested documents, or filed by candidates with a pending criminal case will be rejected outright. SC/ST candidates who are not already working in Government/PSU service will be reimbursed 2nd Class train or bus fare (shortest route) for attending the exam, skill test and interview.
