Gauhati High Court Private Secretary (Stenographer Grade-I) Recruitment 2026 - 3 Posts
The Gauhati High Court at Guwahati — which is also the High Court for Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh — has released Advertisement No. 227/R.Cell dated 6 July 2026 for 3 Private Secretary (Stenographer Grade-I) posts in its Principal Seat. Of the 3 posts, 1 each is reserved for OBC/MOBC, ST (Plains) and ST (Hills) candidates, with 1 post carrying a horizontal reservation for PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities) candidates. You must hold a valid Employment Exchange Registration Number in the State of Assam to apply for this post, and law graduates get extra weightage. Your candidature at every stage is treated as purely provisional and subject to verification of your original documents, and the High Court reserves the right to change the number of posts at the time of final selection.
Who Can Apply?
- Qualification: Bachelor's degree from a recognized university, preferably with a diploma in Stenography in English
- Speed Requirement: Minimum shorthand speed of 120 words per minute and computer typing speed of 50 words per minute
- Preference: Law graduates get due weightage
- Domicile: A valid Employment Exchange Registration Number for the State of Assam is mandatory
- PwBD Categories Eligible: One Leg (OL), Dwarfism (DW), Leprosy Cured (LC), Acid Attack Victim (AAV)
Age Limit
- OBC/MOBC and ST (Plains/Hills): Maximum age is 43 years.
- PwBD: Maximum age is 48 years.
- Age is calculated as on the last date of submission of the online application (30 July 2026).
Salary
- Selected candidates will get a salary of Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 1,10,000 per month under Pay Band-4, with a Grade Pay of Rs. 13,300.
- You will also get other allowances as admissible under Assam government rules.
Application Fee
- OBC / MOBC: Rs. 500
- ST (Plains) / ST (Hills): Rs. 250
- PwBD: No fee
- Fees must be paid online by 5 August 2026. Fees once paid are not refunded, and cannot be adjusted against any other examination or selection.
Selection Process
The selection will be done in 3 stages:
- Stenography Test (90 marks): Includes voice testing (2 minutes), dictation in shorthand at 120 words per minute (840 words in 7 minutes), computer/keyboard setup time (3 minutes) and transcription on computer (20 minutes). You need at least 45 out of 90 marks (50%) to qualify for the next stage.
- Written Examination (100 marks, 2 hours, Descriptive Type): Tests English language proficiency — composition, essay and grammar (80 marks) — and Assamese language (20 marks). Candidates in the ratio of 1:10 (based on Stenography Test merit) are called. This stage is qualifying only — you need at least 32/80 in English and 8/20 in Assamese; these marks are not added to your final merit.
- Interview/Viva-Voce (30 marks): Candidates in the ratio of 1:3 (based on Stenography Test merit) who clear the written exam are called for interview and document verification. You need at least 12 out of 30 marks (40%) to qualify.
Your final merit is based on the total of your Stenography Test and Interview marks. Ties are broken first by higher Stenography Test marks, then by seniority in age. Being called for any stage does not guarantee your selection — the High Court can reject your candidature at any time, even after issuing an admit card or call letter, if you are found ineligible on verification.
