Who Can Apply?

Scientist-B (Mechanical)

  • Qualification option 1: Master's Degree in Physics with 1 year practical experience in testing, calibration, precision measurements, or metrology.
  • Qualification option 2: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering with 2 years practical experience in testing, calibration, precision measurements, or metrology.
  • Desirable: Research and Development experience in testing of engineering materials and metrology or calibration of instruments and machines.

Scientific Officer (Non-Destructive)

  • Qualification: Master's Degree in Physics, or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Metallurgy.
  • Experience: You need 1 year experience in a Non-Destructive Testing laboratory, X-Ray Diffraction, or failure investigation work by non-destructive and metallographic testing methods.

Superintending Archaeological Engineer

  • Qualification: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised university or institute.
  • Experience: You need 8 years experience in planning, execution, and supervision of civil engineering works in the government sector or at archaeological or heritage sites.

Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering (Survey)

  • Qualification: B.E./B.Tech in Civil Engineering and M.E./M.Tech in Civil Engineering (Geo Informatics/Geoinformatics and Surveying Technology).
  • Marks condition: You need first class or equivalent in either the bachelor's or master's degree.

Age Limit

  • Scientist-B: Maximum 35 years for UR candidates.
  • Scientific Officer: Maximum 33 years for OBC candidates.
  • Superintending Archaeological Engineer: Maximum 40 years for UR candidates and 50 years for PwBD candidates.
  • Assistant Professor: Maximum 38 years for OBC candidates.
  • Age date: Eligibility is counted as on the closing date, 15 May 2026.
  • Relaxation: SC/ST, OBC, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and eligible Central/UT Government servants get relaxation as per Government of India rules.

Salary

  • Scientific Officer: Pay Level 8 - Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100 per month.
  • Scientist-B: Pay Level 10 - Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month.
  • Assistant Professor: Academic Level 10 - Rs. 57,700 to Rs. 1,82,400 per month.
  • Superintending Archaeological Engineer: Pay Level 11 - Rs. 67,700 to Rs. 2,08,700 per month.
  • Allowances: Selected candidates will also get DA, HRA, TA and other allowances as per Central Government rules.

  • SC / ST / PwBD / Women candidates: No fee

Selection Process

UPSC selection for these posts is mainly through shortlisting and interview. If applications are large, UPSC may use additional shortlisting criteria or hold a Recruitment Test.

  1. Application screening: UPSC checks your qualification, experience, category, documents, and claims made in the online form.
  2. Shortlisting or Recruitment Test: UPSC may shortlist by higher qualification, higher experience, desirable qualification, or a test if needed.
  3. Interview: Interview carries 100 marks. Minimum suitability marks are UR 50, OBC 45, and SC/ST/PwBD 40.
  4. Document Verification: You must bring the printout of your online application and original documents when called by UPSC.

Responsibilities

  • Handle technical work in the assigned scientific, engineering, teaching, or heritage engineering role
  • Check test requests, engineering documents, reports, and technical records as applicable to the post
  • Supervise samples, laboratory work, civil works, conservation works, or classroom activities based on posting
  • Prepare test certificates, engineering notes, teaching material, or conservation reports for official use
  • Work with senior officers, laboratory staff, students, or project teams to complete assigned duties
  • Follow Central Government rules, safety standards, and departmental procedures
  • Manage records, files, and communication needed for audits, inspections, or academic review

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Master's Degree in Physics or relevant Engineering/Civil Engineering degree as per post

Preferred Qualification

R&D experience in testing of engineering materials and metrology/calibration of instruments and machines for Scientist-B

Required Skills

Testing, calibration, metrology, non-destructive testing, civil engineering, heritage engineering, surveying, or teaching skills as applicable

Age Limit

18 - 50 years (as on 15 May 2026)

Age Relaxation:

  • OBC: Up to 3 years for OBC candidates where the post is reserved for OBC
