Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of India's largest steel producers and a Maharatna company, with a workforce of nearly 50,000 employees and its corporate office in New Delhi. PESB is now hiring a Director (Personnel) for the company under Advertisement No. 75/2026. As a member of the Board of Directors, you would report to the Chairman and take charge of the company's personnel, industrial relations and administrative functions. This is a full-time appointment for a tenure of five years.

On the date you apply (and on the interview date), you must be working in a regular role - not on contract or ad-hoc basis - in one of these:

  • A Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), including a full-time functional Director on a CPSE Board
  • A Central Government Group 'A' post, including the Armed Forces, All India Services, Public Sector Banks, Financial Institutions or Autonomous Bodies
  • A State Public Sector Enterprise with an annual turnover of Rs. 10,000 crore or more
  • A private company, joint venture or cooperative federation with an annual turnover of Rs. 10,000 crore or more (listed companies get preference)

Educational Qualification

  • You must be a Graduate with a good academic record from a recognised university or institute.
  • Preferred: a Post Graduate Diploma or Degree in Personnel Management / HR Management, or an MBA / PGDM / PGPM.

Experience

You need solid experience over the last 10 years, and you can meet it through any one of these routes:

  • Category I: At least 5 years in HR, IR or Personnel (these candidates get priority).
  • Category II: At least 2 years in HR/IR/Personnel plus 3 years as functional head of a project or plant with direct responsibility for about 1,000 people.
  • Category III: At least 5 years as functional head of a project or plant with direct responsibility for at least 20% of the workforce.

Applicants from PSEs, private companies, JVs or federations must be working at Board level or one level below the Board.

Other Conditions

  • Immediate absorption: Central Government officers (including the Armed Forces, All India Services, and officers from Public Sector Banks, Financial Institutions and Autonomous Bodies) are considered only on immediate absorption basis.
  • Undertaking: You must give an undertaking that you will join the post if selected, or your application will be rejected.
  • Proper channel: Your application must be sent through proper channel and be clear from the vigilance angle.

Age Limit

  • Minimum age: 45 years (as on 1 July 2027, the date of vacancy).
  • Maximum age for internal candidates: 58 years - you need at least 2 years of service left before retirement at 60.
  • Maximum age for all other candidates: 57 years - you need at least 3 years of service left before retirement at 60.

Salary

  • Pay scale: Rs. 1,80,000 - 3,40,000 per month (IDA pay pattern for Board-level executives).
  • You will also get Dearness Allowance (DA), perks and allowances under the CPSE cafeteria approach, and other benefits as per government (DPE) rules.
  • The retirement age (superannuation) for this post is 60 years.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

There is no written exam for this post. Selection is done in two steps:

  1. Shortlisting: The PESB Board shortlists candidates for interview based on eligibility, qualifications and experience, keeping in view the applicable PESB guidelines.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates are called for an interview before the Board, which then recommends the final candidate.

  • Work as a member of the Board of Directors and report to the Chairman
