NHPC Consultant (Safety) Recruitment 2026: Overview

NHPC Limited, the Navratna hydropower company of the Government of India, is looking for a Consultant (Safety) on a contract basis to watch over safety across every power project under its control. NHPC runs 31 power stations and is building seventeen more projects, many of them involving tunnels, underground works, blasting and heavy lifting — exactly the high-risk work this consultant will review.

This is a post-retirement engagement: NHPC wants a retired safety professional who left service at General Manager level or above in the power, mining, infrastructure or government sector. You will be based at the NHPC Corporate Office in Sector-33, Faridabad, work under the HOD (Safety), Safety Division as your nodal authority, and travel to projects and power stations of NHPC and its joint ventures and subsidiaries across India.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Contract term: The contract runs for one year at first and can be extended by mutual consent, but never beyond the age of 65.
• Fixed pay, no increments: Your monthly pay is fixed once, from your last drawn pay minus basic pension, and does not rise during the contract.
• Full-time and exclusive: You cannot take up any other assignment while working with NHPC. You may be called on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays in an urgent situation, with no extra pay.
• Travel support: An official pool vehicle covers duty within Delhi/NCR, and the project or power station sends a vehicle from the nearest railway station or airport when you are on tour.
• Leave: You earn 1.5 days of paid leave for each completed month; unused leave cannot be carried past the calendar year.
• Tax: Income tax is deducted at source with a TDS certificate, while GST is reimbursed when you show proof of payment.
• Conflict of interest: You must not advise or represent anyone in a matter that goes against NHPC's interest, and you cannot claim absorption or regularisation later.
• Confidentiality: All data and reports you produce belong to NHPC. You must hand over the full set of assignment records before the contract ends and before your final payment is released.
• Notice period: Either side can end the engagement with 15 days' notice.
• Not a permanent job: The post is not against any permanent vacancy and gives no right to regular employment in NHPC.
• Risk and liability: NHPC is not responsible for any accident, injury or loss you suffer while doing the work, including site visits and travel.
• Interview travel: If you are called for interview from more than 30 km away, NHPC repays your to-and-fro fare (up to economy air) by the shorter route when you show the ticket.

• Assess existing safety arrangements at power plants, construction projects and maintenance sites
• Identify major hazards and risks and suggest measures to control them
• Review the Safety Management System, SOPs, permit-to-work system and emergency preparedness at work sites
• Check safety in tunnelling, underground works, excavation, blasting, heavy lifting, work at height and heavy machinery
• Analyse accidents and near-miss incidents to recommend preventive and corrective measures
• Review safety manpower and PPE adequacy for employees and contract workers across projects
• Strengthen contractor and sub-contractor safety systems and review designs, methods and work plans for safety
• Prepare a time-bound Safety Improvement Plan and present safety findings to NHPC management
