Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has released Advertisement No. 002/2026 for the Maharashtra Forest Services Main Examination 2025 to fill 144 Forest Range Officer (Group-B) positions across the state of Maharashtra. These posts fall under the Revenue and Forest Department and offer a rewarding career in forest conservation and wildlife management.   • Alternative Qualification: If you have a degree in a discipline other than Science, you are eligible only if you studied Mathematics as a subject during your graduation.
  • Domicile: Maharashtra domicile may be required as per state government norms.

Age Limit

  • You should be between 21 and 38 years old.
  • Age Relaxation: Candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) can apply up to 43 years of age as per Maharashtra Government rules.
  • PwBD Candidates: Age relaxation of up to 5 years is applicable for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities as per government norms.

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get a salary of Rs. 51,800 to Rs. 1,32,300 per month (basic pay range).
  • You will also receive Dearness Allowance (DA) at the current rate (revised twice a year).
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): 24% in Mumbai/Pune, 16% in other city areas, 8% in rural postings.
  • Travel Allowance (TA) for official travel and other allowances as per Maharashtra Government rules.
  • Additional benefits include medical facilities, pension, and retirement benefits.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in 4 stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination: Objective type (MCQ) exam with two papers. Paper 1 covers General Studies (200 marks, 2 hours) and Paper 2 is CSAT/Aptitude (200 marks, 2 hours). Paper 2 is qualifying only (minimum 33% needed). Negative marking of 1/4th mark for each wrong answer applies.
  2. Main Examination: Descriptive type papers covering General Studies and optional subjects. The mains exam carries a total of 1,050 marks across multiple papers including Marathi, English, and General Studies papers.
  3. Interview: Candidates who clear the mains exam are called for a personal interview worth 275 marks. Final merit is based on Mains + Interview (total 1,325 marks).
  4. Medical Examination: Selected candidates undergo a medical fitness test before final appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and protect designated forest areas, wildlife habitats, and natural resources within the assigned range
  • Patrol forest zones to prevent illegal logging, poaching, mining, and encroachment activities
  • Monitor and control forest fires, supervise fire prevention measures, and lead emergency response operations
  • Prepare and maintain records related to forest inventory, timber storage, and wildlife census data
  • Supervise forest guards, watchers, and other field staff posted under the range
  • Assist in implementing afforestation programs, plantation drives, and soil conservation projects
  • Handle public grievances related to forest land and coordinate with local communities on conservation efforts
  • Enforce the Indian Forest Act, Wildlife Protection Act, and other environmental laws within the jurisdiction

Exam Pattern

The MPSC Forest Services examination has a three-stage written exam process followed by an interview and medical examination.

Preliminary Examination

The prelims exam has 2 papers, both objective (MCQ) type:

  • Paper 1 - General Studies: 200 marks, 2 hours duration. Covers Indian Polity, History, Geography, Science, Economy, Current Affairs, and Environment.
  • Paper 2 - CSAT (Aptitude): 200 marks, 2 hours duration. This is a qualifying paper only — you need a minimum of 33% marks to qualify. Marks from Paper 2 are not counted in the merit.

Negative Marking: 1/4th of the marks allotted to a question will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Exam Language: English and Marathi.

Main Examination

The mains consists of 9 descriptive papers totalling 1,050 marks:

  • Marathi Language: 100 marks, 3 hours (qualifying)
  • English Language: 100 marks, 1 hour (qualifying)
  • General Studies Papers (I to VII): 150 marks each, 2 hours each — all 7 papers count toward merit (total 1,050 marks)

General Studies papers cover topics including Indian Polity, Governance, Economics, History, Geography, Science and Technology, Environment, Agriculture, and Forestry.

Interview

Candidates who clear the mains exam are called for a personal interview carrying 275 marks.

Final Merit: Mains marks (1,050) + Interview marks (275) = Total 1,325 marks.
