MPSC Assistant (Legal) Recruitment 2026: Overview

Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has opened recruitment for Assistant (Legal), Group-B (Non-Gazetted) posts in the state government's Law and Judiciary Department. These are regular state cadre posts under Advertisement No. 022/2026, and the whole application runs on the commission's online system. Any law graduate can apply, but a Master's degree in Law gives you preference when the commission shortlists candidates. Selection is interview-led, so your degree, profile and documents carry most of the weight here.

The post sits in the department that handles the state government's legal work, and the commission has published the detailed duties of Assistant (Legal) on mpsc.gov.in under its duties and responsibilities section. Read that page before you apply so you know what the job involves day to day.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Five-year law degrees count: As per a Law and Judiciary Department letter dated 18 October 2022, integrated courses such as B.S.L. LL.B., B.B.A. LL.B., B.S.L. LL.B. and B.A. LL.B. are treated as equal to an LL.B.
  • Reservation only for Maharashtra residents: Any social or parallel reservation benefit is open only to ordinary residents of Maharashtra. Open (unreserved) seats are filled on merit from all applicants, including reserved-category candidates.
  • Women's reserved seats: If you claim a seat reserved for women, you must clearly state in the form that you are Maharashtra domiciled, and women from backward classes other than SC and ST must state that they are non-creamy layer.
  • Disability seats: Seats are kept for persons with benchmark disabilities in two groups: deaf and hard of hearing, and locomotor disability, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy. You cannot apply as a PwBD candidate until your UDID or Swavlamban enrolment details are validated in your MPSC profile.
  • SEBC seats subject to court cases: Recommendations and appointments are subject to the final outcome of court cases on the SEBC Reservation Act of 26 February 2024.
  • Certificates for the right year: Your EWS and non-creamy layer certificates must be valid for the financial year 2026-27.
  • Shortlisting: If far more people apply than needed, MPSC can limit the interview list through a screening test or higher qualification or experience criteria. Meeting the minimum qualification alone does not guarantee an interview call.
  • Interview cut-off: You need at least 41% marks in the interview to be considered for recommendation.
  • After joining: You must pass the departmental exam, finish probation, clear the Hindi and Marathi language exams unless exempt, and hold a computer proficiency certificate as per state IT rules. Missing these within the set time can end your service.
  • No phones: Mobile phones and other electronic devices are banned at the commission's office, exam centres and interviews.

Application Submission Notes

You can apply only on mpsconline.gov.in. New users first create a profile; existing users should update theirs and complete the account KYC as required by the commission's notice of 20 June 2025. PwBD candidates must validate their disability details before the form will open for them.

Upload each certificate as a PDF between 50 KB and 500 KB, or share it from DigiLocker. After you submit, pay the fee online only, through debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI, using the Submit and Pay fees button or the Pay Now link under My Account. The challan option has been withdrawn. Do not log out until you see the Payment Successful message and your fee status updates.
