The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, is hiring 5 Senior Research Officers and Research Officers for the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-3) project, funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. If you have a PhD or Master's/M.Phil degree in Social Sciences, Population Studies, Demography, Mathematics, Statistics or Public Health, you can walk in for the interview on 11 August 2026. These are temporary positions with a consolidated salary of up to Rs. 85,000 per month.

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), a Deemed-to-be-University in Mumbai, has invited candidates for a walk-in interview to fill 3 Senior Research Officer (Social) and 2 Research Officer positions under the GATS-3 (Global Adult Tobacco Survey) project. GATS is a nationally representative survey that tracks tobacco use patterns across India and has been conducted in earlier rounds as well; GATS-3 is the latest edition, sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Selected candidates will work on survey design, fieldwork supervision, data analysis and reporting. No online application is required - you can walk straight into the interview with your documents. Selected candidates will be appointed initially for 3 months, which may be extended based on your performance. This is a good opportunity for social science and demography postgraduates who want to work on a major national health survey at a premier institute for population studies.

For Senior Research Officer (Social) — Salary up to Rs. 85,000/month:

  • Qualification: PhD (awarded or submitted) in Social Sciences, Population Studies, Demography, Mathematics, Statistics or Public Health.
  • Experience: Working experience in social research or national-level sample surveys.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of quantitative research methods and survey methodologies.

For Research Officer — Salary up to Rs. 65,000/month:

  • Qualification: PhD (synopsis submitted or presented) in Social Sciences, Population Studies, Demography, Mathematics, Statistics or Public Health, OR M.Phil/Master's degree in the same subjects with 1 year of working experience.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of quantitative research methods and experience analysing large-scale demographic data.

Salary

  • Senior Research Officer (Social): Consolidated salary up to Rs. 85,000 per month, fixed as per your qualification and experience.
  • Research Officer: Consolidated salary up to Rs. 65,000 per month, fixed as per your qualification and experience.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

Selection is through a walk-in interview only, with no screening test or shortlisting round before it:

  1. Walk-in Interview: Held in person before the selection committee at IIPS, Mumbai. Bring your CV, degree certificates, experience certificates, other relevant certificates, a recent photo, and Aadhaar/PAN card.

  • Support dissemination of survey findings to stakeholders
  • Coordinate with field teams and state-level survey partners
  • Maintain accurate documentation of survey progress and outcomes

PhD or Master's/M.Phil in Social Sciences, Population Studies, Demography, Mathematics, Statistics or Public Health

Knowledge of quantitative research methods and survey methodologies; experience in national-level sample surveys or large-scale demographic data analysis
