Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai is hiring 1 Female Social Work Fellow on a contract basis for Prayas, its field action project under the Centre for Criminology and Justice. You will be posted at Kalyan District Prison, Kalyan City in Maharashtra. The salary is Rs. 30,000 per month (including field work allowance), and the last date to apply is 15 April 2026. You need a Master in Social Work (MSW) degree to be eligible.

TISS is one of India's top social science institutes, established in 1936 and declared a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. It operates as a grant-in-aid institute under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Prayas, started in 1990, focuses on the socio-legal and economic rehabilitation of people processed by the Criminal Justice System. Educational Qualification

• Master in Social Work (MSW) from any recognized Institute or University

Other Requirements

• Female candidates only — as the post involves working in a female prison where male staff are not permitted as per prison rules
• Fluency in spoken Hindi and English is required
• Preference given to candidates with fluency in spoken Marathi
• Preference for candidates with prior experience in social work practice in criminal justice
• Good ability in written English (and preferably Marathi and Hindi)
• Familiarity with MS-Office, emails, and the internet
• Willingness to travel in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad District, and outside districts and states when necessary

Age Limit

• Maximum age: Below 35 years as on 31 March 2026
• The institute may relax qualifications, experience, or age in exceptional cases

Salary

• Rs. 30,000 per month (consolidated, including field work allowance)
• Contract duration: Up to 1 year, extendable based on satisfactory performance and project requirement

• SC/ST/PwBD candidates: Rs. 125 (with required certificate attached to online application)
• Women applicants: No fee (fully waived)
• Fees once paid are not refundable under any circumstances

Selection Process

There is no written exam for this post. Selection is based on shortlisting and a personal interview.

1. Shortlisting — Applications will be screened based on qualifications and experience. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview call
2. Personal Interview — Shortlisted candidates will be called for an in-person interview at TISS, Mumbai. Online interviews will not be allowed
3. Document Verification — At the time of interview, you must bring xerox copies (self-attested) and original documents for verification

• Work with female inmates at Kalyan District Prison to understand their socio-legal needs and provide support
• Assist in the socio-legal and economic rehabilitation of persons processed by the Criminal Justice System
• Prepare case histories, reports, and documentation related to inmates and their cases
• Follow up with families, legal aid services, and community resources for inmates' rehabilitation
• Handle coordination with prison authorities, courts, and legal aid organizations
• Keep records of field visits and interventions using MS-Office and digital tools
• Travel to Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and other districts or states as required for field work
• Assist the Prayas project team in research, training, and policy advocacy activities
