IITGN Postdoctoral Fellow EE Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is engaging a Postdoctoral Fellow in Electrical Engineering through its Research and Development Office. The fellow will work with Prof. Raghunandan M. Rao on a focused research project titled Experimental Characterization of Asymptotic Scaling Laws in Beyond Convex-Hull Range-Based Localization. This is a temporary, project-linked research appointment based at the IITGN campus.

The project addresses a difficult localization problem: estimating the position of a target that lies outside the convex hull of the available anchors. Existing theory has described asymptotic behaviour for Time-of-Arrival localization in these geometries, while the corresponding framework for Time-Difference-of-Arrival systems still needs development and realistic validation. The research therefore connects mathematical analysis with a practical question faced by vehicle-centred and infrastructure-free positioning systems.

Real-world radio constraints are central to the project. Synchronization limits, finite bandwidth, multipath effects and anchor geometry can all change localization accuracy. The study is designed to examine those effects through theory, simulation and measurement instead of treating them as ideal assumptions. It will use Universal Software Radio Peripheral equipment and millimetre-wave radar to build an experimental testbed, compare measured behaviour with asymptotic models, and study how error changes with target distance, signal-to-noise ratio, bandwidth and geometry.

The fellow will occupy a senior research role across both analytical and experimental work. The project calls for someone comfortable moving between derivations, Monte Carlo simulation, signal-processing implementation, radio-hardware integration and large measurement campaigns. It also includes research mentoring and scholarly writing, so the appointment suits a researcher who wants to guide M.Tech. and Ph.D. students while contributing to journal and conference papers. Evidence of research output in communications or signal processing is particularly relevant to this work.

Service Conditions and Caveats

Responsibilities

  • Develop theoretical models for TDoA localization in beyond convex-hull geometries
  • Derive CRLB, DOP, and asymptotic error-scaling results for the proposed framework
  • Build, synchronize, calibrate, and debug the USRP and millimetre-wave radar testbed
  • Implement signal-processing algorithms and Monte Carlo simulations in MATLAB or Python
  • Run large measurement campaigns and analyse localization error under practical constraints
  • Refine theoretical models using evidence from synchronization, bandwidth, and multipath experiments
  • Mentor M.Tech. and Ph.D. students working on the project
  • Prepare research findings for journal and conference publication

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a relevant area, with an educational background in Communications or Signal Processing; candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis may also apply

Preferred Qualification

Research output in Communications or Signal Processing; strong mathematics; experience with large MATLAB or Python wireless-simulation codebases; hands-on work with USRPs and RF sensors
