GBRC Project Scientist, RA and JRF Recruitment 2026: Overview

Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), which works under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, is filling project posts across nearly twenty research projects at its Gandhinagar centre. The openings run from Project Scientist III and II down to Research Associates, Junior Research Fellows, Lab Technicians and a Field Worker.

The projects cover a wide spread of biotechnology — wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 under INSACOG, antimicrobial resistance, tribal genomics, vaccine and antibody development, crop genome editing and dairy-breed genomics. All posts are contractual and tied to their projects, so they suit researchers looking for funded project experience rather than a permanent job. Fresh postgraduates can apply for JRF posts, while Ph.D holders and experienced researchers can aim for the RA and scientist posts.

Posts and Disciplines

• Project Scientist III: leads the Environmental Surveillance as a Key Public Health Strategy in India project (ENV-24); suits senior researchers from industry or academia.
• Project Scientist II: joins the INSACOG wastewater surveillance project tracking SARS-CoV-2, emerging pathogens and antimicrobial resistance through genomics (BIRAC-DBT funded).
• Lab Technician: one post on the ENV-24 environmental surveillance project and one on the INSACOG wastewater project.
• Research Associate: spread over seven projects — sport genomics for Gujarat's athletes, a genomic selection network for dairy cattle and buffalo, a reference genome database for Gujarat's tribal population, an adenovirus vector vaccine platform, camelid single-domain antibodies (SdAb), the AMR, Superbugs and One Health network, and a baculovirus platform for recombinant sericin used in cosmetics.
• Junior Research Fellow: posts on the AMR network, tribal genomics, guggulsterone production in Commiphora wightii cell cultures, potato genome editing, plant tissue culture, the microbial repository, the GBRC service unit, SdAb antibodies, the genome editing facility, probiotics and antimicrobial peptides, PCAD, and a CRISPR-Cas9 Bacillus subtilis project for allulose from rice straw.
• Field Worker: works on screening genetic disorders among women and children in the Aspirational Districts of Gujarat.

Most RA and JRF rows name a preferred skill, such as NGS data analysis, Linux, GWAS, mammalian cell culture, LC-MS, plant tissue culture or nanoparticle work — match your experience to the project before you apply.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: Posts are purely temporary and contractual for an initial 11 months. They can be extended on satisfactory performance until the project ends.
• Co-terminus with the project: You cannot claim a regular appointment, and there is no re-engagement after the project ends.
• Fellowship depends on your route: RA and JRF pay changes with your qualification route. JRFs without NET and RAs entering through the M.Sc route are not entitled to HRA.
• Extra positions: If similar positions arise or new ones are sanctioned during this process, GBRC can fill them without a fresh advertisement.
• Posts may stay vacant: GBRC can leave any post unfilled if no suitable candidate is found.
• No TA/DA: You will not be paid travel or daily allowance for attending the interview.
