Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) Post-Doctoral Fellow Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) has released Advertisement No. IP/10129/Advt0254 to fill one Post-Doctoral Fellow position under Dr. Abhishek Singhal in the Civil Engineering department. This is a temporary, institute-funded research role in the WasteX group, focused on Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), process modelling and thermochemical conversion of waste. If you are a recent PhD holder (or have submitted your thesis) and want to work on sustainable waste-to-value research, this position is a strong fit.

The WasteX group develops sustainable ways to turn different biowaste materials, such as biomass, plastics, textiles and sanitary waste, into useful products using thermochemical and hydrothermal pathways. As the Post-Doctoral Fellow, your main task will cover Life-Cycle Assessment, with parts of the work linked to techno-economic assessment and process optimization. The projects focus on solid waste management, biomass pretreatment, thermochemical conversion and greenhouse-gas emission calculation for low-carbon concrete. Many of these projects run in collaboration with other IITs and institutions abroad, so short travel for experiments in partner labs may be needed.

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must have a PhD in Environmental / Civil / Energy / Chemical or any other relevant field from a recognised university or institute, with experience in Biomass Pretreatment and/or thermochemical conversion and Life Cycle Assessment.
  • Thesis submitted: Candidates who have submitted their thesis (result awaited) can also apply.
  • Marks: You need a minimum of 60% marks (or equivalent grade) from the undergraduate level onwards, and at least 55% marks in both Class 10 and Class 12.

Desirable Skills (Preferred, Not Mandatory)

  • Hands-on experience in Life-Cycle Assessment, preferably in thermochemical conversion or waste management projects.
  • Experience in techno-economic assessment, process modelling and optimization.
  • Prior work with biomass and thermochemical conversion (gasification, pyrolysis, HTL) and/or wastewater treatment.
  • Working knowledge of SimaPro and Aspen software.
  • Comfort handling large datasets and knowledge of at least one programming language.
  • Good communication and academic writing skills.

Salary

  • You will get a consolidated monthly pay of Rs. 72,000 to Rs. 84,000 per month, including HRA.
  • The appointment is for one year, extendable based on your performance and project funding.

Selection Process

The selection is based on your research profile:

  1. Application Screening: Your CV, transcripts, publications and Statement of Purpose will be reviewed.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview with the Principal Investigator and the research team.

How to Apply

  1. Prepare your CV with all qualifications, research experience, technical skills, list of publications and contact details.
  2. Keep combined transcripts of your undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD coursework ready.
  3. Write a Statement of Purpose covering your research experience and motivation, plus an optional cover letter.
  4. Attach your three best first-author publications and the names and contact details of 2 referees.
  5. Submit everything through the WasteX PostDoc online application form linked in the official notification, clearly mentioning the position you are applying for.
  6. For any query, contact Prof. Abhishek Singhal at abhishek.singhal@iitgn.ac.in.

  • Last Date to Apply: 22 July 2026
  • Interview Date: To be announced

Responsibilities

  • Develop sustainable solutions for valorizing biowaste such as biomass, plastics, textiles and sanitary waste.
  • Carry out Life-Cycle Assessment and process modelling for biomass handling, thermochemical conversion and sustainable concrete.
  • Build and refine new models along with inventory datasets for the group's projects.
  • Calculate GHG emissions for low-carbon concrete and run techno-economic assessments.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in preparing competitive funding proposals.
  • Prepare high-quality research articles for publication.
  • Travel to collaborating labs at other IITs and institutions to run experiments when required.
