Tezpur University, a Central University established by an Act of Parliament, has released Advertisement No. 21/2026 dated 31 July 2026 for 2 Assistant Professor (Contractual) posts in the Department of Law, under the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. The position is for Human Rights Law/Constitutional Law specialization. This is a purely interview-based selection — there is no written exam, and academic score is used only to shortlist candidates when a large number of applications are received. If you are a law academic interested in teaching and research in human rights or constitutional law, this is a good opportunity to join a Central University. Tezpur University is located at Napaam in Tezpur, Assam, and runs undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across Engineering, Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management. The position is for 11 months, or till the regular vacancy is filled, whichever is earlier, with a provision for further extension based on requirement and your performance.

Who Can Apply?

• Qualification: A Master's degree with 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in Human Rights Law/Constitutional Law or a concerned/relevant/allied subject, from a recognized Indian University or an accredited foreign university.
• Mandatory: Along with the Master's degree, you must have cleared UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or an equivalent test like SLET/SET, or hold a PhD degree as per UGC (Minimum Standards) Regulations 2009/2016 (candidates with a valid PhD are exempted from NET/SLET/SET, subject to conditions).
• Alternative Route: A PhD from a foreign university ranked among the top 500 in the QS, THE, or ARWU world rankings is also acceptable, without the NET/SLET requirement.
• PhD Exemption (registered before 11 July 2009): You are exempted from NET/SLET/SET if your PhD was awarded in regular mode, evaluated by at least two external examiners, defended in an open viva voce, and led to at least two published research papers (one in a refereed journal) plus two conference/seminar presentations sponsored by UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or a similar agency.
• Note: NET/SLET/SET is not required for Master's programmes where such tests are not conducted by UGC/CSIR. SLET/SET clearance is valid as minimum eligibility only within the state that conducted it.
• Preferred: Candidates holding a PhD in a relevant branch/specialization will be given preference.

Salary

• Selected candidates will get a fixed emolument of Rs. 80,000 per month.
• No other allowances are admissible for this contractual position.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in the following steps:

1. Academic Score Shortlisting: If a large number of candidates apply, you will be shortlisted for interview based on your academic qualifications and experience, using the academic score defined under UGC Regulations 2018 (Appendix II, Table 3A).
2. Personal Interview: Final selection is based only on your performance in the interview, which you must attend physically at Tezpur University. The interview date will be notified separately in due course.

As per UGC guidelines, the academic score is used strictly for shortlisting purposes and does not carry any weightage in the final selection — so make sure you prepare well for the interview itself.
