IIM Mumbai Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai), known as NITIE Mumbai until it became an IIM, is filling Assistant Professor (Grade-I and Grade-II) posts through a special recruitment drive for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and PwD candidates. The institute set up by the Government of India in 1963 is ranked 6th among management institutes in NIRF 2025 and sits on a lake-facing campus in Powai, Mumbai.

This is a rolling advertisement — positions stay open until they are filled, and IIM Mumbai screens applications area by area as its needs arise. If you hold a PhD (or have cleared your viva voce) in a management discipline and have a solid record of journal publications, you can apply at any time.

Posts and Disciplines

• Assistant Professor (Grade-I): the senior entry grade, for PhD holders who already have at least three years of teaching, research or industry experience after the PhD.
• Assistant Professor (Grade-II): the entry grade for fresh PhDs; experience helps but is not required, and candidates with a provisional PhD award after viva voce can apply.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Research record matters most: Papers in Web of Science Q1/Q2 journals count as research evidence, and FT50 publications are especially welcome. First-author or communicating-author papers in Q1 journals carry extra weight.
• Methods edge: A track record of using AI, machine learning, operations research, simulation or advanced statistical modelling in your domain earns preference.
• Probation: Regular appointments carry a two-year probation. If you do not meet the teaching and publication criteria by its end, you can be relieved under IIM Mumbai rules.
• Grade movement: Grade-I faculty move to a higher academic pay level after three years while keeping the Assistant Professor title; Grade-II faculty are elevated under the institute's rules.
• Contract route: Candidates short of the required experience may be offered a contractual Grade-II post, and the Selection Committee can recommend you for a different position than the one you applied for.
• Experience rules: Part-time experience does not count, and all degrees must come from UGC-recognised or AICTE-approved institutions.
• Government employees: Apply through proper channel or give a No Objection Certificate; staff of foreign institutions are exempt.
• Foreign passport holders: Need political and security clearance from the Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs.
• Interview travel: Shortlisted candidates called to the campus get economy airfare within India reimbursed, booked only through Balmer Lawrie, Ashoka Travels or IRCTC.
