Pondicherry University, a central university located at Kalapet, Puducherry, has released a notification for 1 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) post under a research project funded by ER&IPR, DRDO, Government of India. The project is led by Dr. V. Uma, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science.

The project is titled "Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Underwater Noise Classification System for the Indian Ocean Region." In simple words, you will help build a machine learning system that can listen to underwater sounds and tell them apart — work that is useful for ocean research and maritime defence. It is a great chance to get hands-on research experience in machine learning and ocean acoustics while working on a real DRDO project.

The post is for 3 years or till the project ends, whichever is earlier. Your first appointment will be for 1 year and can be extended up to 3 years based on your performance. Please note this is a purely temporary post that depends on the availability of project funds.

Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification (any one route)

• M.Sc. in Physics / Physical Oceanography / Mathematics with 1 year of experience in ocean acoustic modeling and data analysis, OR
• M.Tech. in Ocean Technology or an equivalent degree, along with a course in Oceanography / Ocean Acoustics.

Skills You Should Have

• Knowledge of Machine Learning, Python and MATLAB is preferred.
• A valid email ID and mobile number are compulsory to apply.

This post is best suited for candidates from a physics, oceanography or ocean-technology background who enjoy coding and data analysis. The Principal Investigator can relax the qualification and experience conditions at their discretion.

Age Limit

• You should preferably be below 35 years of age.
• Age is counted as on the last date to apply (19 July 2026).
• Age may be relaxed at the discretion of the Principal Investigator.

Salary (Fellowship)

• JRF: Rs. 37,000 per month plus 20% HRA for the first two years.
• SRF: Rs. 42,000 per month plus 20% HRA in the third year, after you are upgraded to Senior Research Fellow.
• The fellowship is paid as per DRDO norms, and your date of joining will be immediate after selection.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

There is no written test. Selection works like this:

1. Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on their academic record and research or professional background.
2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates are called for an online or offline interview. You will get the date and time by email.
3. Document Verification: You must show all original certificates and your CV at the interview.

The decision of the selection committee is final. No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview.
