RRI Research Assistant Physics Recruitment 2026: Overview
Raman Research Institute (RRI) is hiring a Research Assistant to work with Prof. Sumati Surya in the Theoretical Physics Group in Bengaluru. The project studies the kinematical and dynamical sides of the causal set approach to quantum gravity, with much of the investigation carried out numerically. This is a focused research appointment for someone who wants to turn advanced ideas in spacetime physics into computational questions rather than take up a general laboratory-support role.
RRI is a Government of India-funded basic-science institute, and the group brings together theoretical work with numerical exploration. Your work will sit at the intersection of general relativity, quantum field theory and scientific programming. The advertisement is specific to this project and supervisor, which makes the research fit as important as the formal degree.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Initial tenure: The appointment begins on a temporary basis for one year. It may be extended for another year when your performance is satisfactory and the project continues to need the role.
- Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum academic requirement does not guarantee an interview. RRI may limit the shortlist by looking at qualifications and experience beyond the stated minimum.
- Open position: If the screening and interview do not identify a suitable person, the institute may keep the opening on its website until it is filled.
- Institute discretion: RRI may relax a stated requirement in an exceptional case and also keeps the right not to fill the advertised position.
- Conduct: Canvassing in any form leads to disqualification, so all communication should stay within the official process.
- Project focus: The selected researcher is expected to contribute to the advertised causal-set programme. This is not a broad call that allows a different theoretical-physics topic after appointment.
- Programming emphasis: The work is numerical, and the advertisement specifically connects the project with C++. Your statement should therefore make the link between your physics background and actual computational work clear.
Application Submission Notes
Apply through the RRI SAFAL online portal and choose the correct advertised post. The same portal may show other institute openings, so check that your form names the Theoretical Physics Research Assistant advertisement before final submission.
A one-to-two-page statement of purpose is compulsory. Use it to explain why causal-set quantum gravity interests you, how your academic work relates to the project and what numerical or C++ experience you can bring. An incomplete form, especially one without this statement, will not be considered.
You must also provide contact details for two referees whom RRI may approach for letters. They can be your teachers or people familiar with your professional work. Make sure they know you have named them and that their e-mail addresses and telephone details are current.
Your CV should clearly show your contact details and prior experience, while the uploaded photograph needs your signature. Keep all uploads readable and consistent because the institute uses the submitted material for screening before interview.
