Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is hiring one Project Associate-I to work on astronomy science communication and public outreach in Bengaluru. If you hold a Master's or BS-MS degree in Physics/Mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology with 60% marks, you can attend the walk-in interview directly — there is no online application. The walk-in interview is on 19 August 2026 at the IIA Campus, Koramangala, Bengaluru. Salary is Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 31,000 per month plus HRA, depending on your qualification.
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Project Associate-I Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post
IIA (Advt. No. IIA/07/2026-27, dated 24 July 2026) is an autonomous national institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, dedicated to research in astronomy, astrophysics and allied sciences. Its main campus is at Koramangala with a CREST campus at Hosakote, and it runs field stations at Kavalur, Kodaikanal, Gauribidanur, and Leh/Hanle. The Institute's SCOPE section (Science Communication, Public Outreach, and Education) is now looking for a Project Associate-I to help coordinate and run its public engagement programs. This is a one-year contract, extendable annually based on project needs and your performance, and you may be posted anywhere in India as required.
Who Can Apply?
- Qualification: Master's or BS-MS degree in Physics/Mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) from a UGC-recognized university or institution.
- Essential Skills: Basic knowledge of astronomy concepts and telescope handling; good communication skills; basic computer skills including graphic design software and Google services; basic video editing and graphic design; fluency in written and spoken English.
- Desirable: Experience in science or astronomy communication, amateur astronomy background, experience creating models/demos for outreach, fluency in Kannada, and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
Age Limit
- You should be up to 35 years old as on the date of the walk-in interview (19 August 2026).
- Age Relaxation: SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates and persons with disabilities get relaxation as per Government of India norms.
Salary
- You will get Rs. 31,000 per month plus HRA if you are selected through CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship/Assistant Professorship), GATE, or another national-level exam conducted by a Central Government department or agency.
- You will get Rs. 25,000 per month plus HRA if you do not fall under the above category.
Selection Process
The selection is based on:
- Document Screening: Bring your CV, Date of Birth proof, educational and experience certificates, and ID proof for verification at the venue.
- Walk-in Interview: Held on 19 August 2026 at IIA's Koramangala campus.
IIA may also conduct a written test to shortlist candidates for the interview if too many people show up. Note: IIA reserves the right to cancel the entire recruitment process at any time, or to increase or decrease the number of vacancies based on project requirements. If you misrepresent facts at any stage, your candidature will be cancelled without notice, and no TA/DA is reimbursed for attending the interview.

Responsibilities
- Create multimedia content such as videos and graphics for astronomy outreach and education
- Design and build hands-on kits, models, posters, and flyers for science communication
- Coordinate with external partners and institutions on outreach activities, especially across Karnataka
- Support logistics and planning for SCOPE public engagement events
- Explain basic astronomy concepts and handle telescope demonstrations for visitors
- Assist with graphic design and basic video editing using standard software and Google tools
- Maintain records of outreach activities and prepare reports for the SCOPE team
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Master's or BS-MS degree in Physics/Mathematics, or Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with 60% marks aggregate
Preferred Qualification
Experience in science/astronomy communication, amateur astronomy background, Kannada fluency
Required Skills
Basic astronomy knowledge, telescope handling, communication skills, basic computer/graphic design skills, video editing, fluency in English
