About This Job
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has opened deputation (ISTC) nominations for the posts of Senior Public Prosecutor (Sr. PP) and Public Prosecutor (PP). If you are a serving government law officer with prosecution experience, this is your chance to join India's premier counter-terror investigation agency. You need a Bachelor's Degree in Law with solid experience in prosecuting criminal cases. The pay falls under Pay Matrix Level 10 and Level 12, and applications must reach NIA HQ in New Delhi on or before 02 June 2026.
NIA Senior Public Prosecutor Recruitment 2026 on Deputation Basis
The National Investigation Agency, functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is inviting nominations from eligible officers serving in the Central Government, State Governments, Union Territories, Public Sector Undertakings, Statutory or Autonomous Organisations, Universities and recognised research institutions. The vacancies are being filled on deputation (Including Short-Term Contract) basis as per standard DoPT terms and conditions. This is a prestige posting that gives you direct exposure to investigation and prosecution of terror, insurgency and other serious national-security cases.
Who Can Apply?
This recruitment is open only to serving officers. You must route your application through your parent department (Cadre Controlling Authority). Eligibility differs by post:
Senior Public Prosecutor (Sr. PP) - Pay Level 12
- Qualification: Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognised University
- Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in prosecution of criminal cases
- Service Condition: Officers of the Central/State Government/UT/PSU/Autonomous bodies holding analogous posts on regular basis OR with five years' regular service in posts in Pay Band-3 (Rs. 15,600-39,100) with Grade Pay of Rs. 5,400/- or equivalent
Public Prosecutor (PP) - Pay Level 10
- Qualification: Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognised University
- Experience: Five (5) years of experience in prosecution of criminal cases
- Service Condition: Officers of the Central/State Government/UT/PSU/Autonomous bodies holding analogous posts on regular basis OR with two years' regular service in posts in Pay Band-2 (Rs. 9,300-34,800) with Grade Pay of Rs. 4,800/- or equivalent
Note: Private practitioners and lawyers who are not government servants are not eligible under this ISTC deputation notification. A separate contractual recruitment notice exists for them.
Age Limit
- As per standard DoPT rules for deputation, the maximum age of the applicant should not exceed 56 years as on the closing date of receipt of applications
- The period of deputation, including the period of deputation in another ex-cadre post held immediately preceding this appointment, shall ordinarily not exceed four (4) years
Salary
Pay will be fixed as per the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix:
- Senior Public Prosecutor (Sr. PP): Pay Matrix Level 12 (Rs. 78,800 - Rs. 2,09,200 per month, earlier pay scale Rs. 15,600-39,100 + GP 7,600)
- Public Prosecutor (PP): Pay Matrix Level 10 (Rs. 56,100 - Rs. 1,77,500 per month, earlier pay scale Rs. 15,600-39,100 + GP 5,400)
- Deputation Allowance: Admissible as per DoPT OM No. 6/8/2009-Estt (Pay.II) dated 17 June 2010
- Other Benefits: DA, HRA, TA and other allowances as per central government rules

Selection Process
Since this is a deputation nomination, there is no written examination. Selection follows the standard government deputation route:
- Nomination by Parent Department - your cadre controlling authority forwards your name to NIA
- Screening of bio-data, ACRs and vigilance clearance by NIA HQ
- Scrutiny by the NIA screening committee
- Personal Interaction or Interview (if called by NIA)
- Final selection and issue of offer on deputation terms
- Joining after relieving from parent department

Responsibilities
- Conduct prosecution of terror-related and anti-national criminal cases assigned to NIA in Special NIA Courts and higher courts
- Prepare charge sheets, draft legal opinions and scrutinise case files submitted by Investigating Officers
- Represent NIA in trial courts, High Courts and the Supreme Court in matters under the NIA Act, UAPA and other central laws
- Advise investigation teams on legal admissibility of evidence, witness protection and charge framing
- Handle bail hearings, appeals, revisions and writ petitions arising out of NIA investigations
- Coordinate with Central and State Prosecution Directorates, counsel panels and expert witnesses
- Keep abreast of latest judgments on terrorism, organised crime and national security jurisprudence
- Assist NIA HQ in drafting legal guidelines, SOPs and training modules for investigation officers
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognised University
Preferred Qualification
Master's Degree in Law (LL.M), specialisation in criminal law, experience in terror/UAPA/NDPS cases
Required Skills
Prosecution of criminal cases, drafting of charge sheets, knowledge of Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code, Evidence Act, NIA Act, UAPA, court advocacy, legal research
