IIT Ropar JRF and SRF NQM Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is building a research team for a three-year project funded by the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The work connects smart-grid power systems with quantum computing, especially where real-time power networks need fast and reliable optimisation. This is a project-based research engagement rather than a regular institute appointment. It is best suited to engineering postgraduates who want to work across power systems, computation and emerging quantum methods.

The project brings together electrical engineering, computer science and control-system ideas in one programme. You may work on algorithms, simulations, experiments, technical writing and joint research with people from different specialities. The notice also leaves room for appointment under another suitable project-staff category when a candidate does not meet the national-level examination condition, subject to institute rules and available funds.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Junior Research Fellow: an entry-level research role for postgraduates from electrical, electronics or computer-related engineering disciplines, with a focus on power systems, power electronics or control.
  • Senior Research Fellow: a more experienced research role in the same technical area; prior research or professional exposure is preferred because the work involves deeper ownership of models, experiments and outputs.

Post-wise Duties

Junior Research Fellow

You will help build and test hybrid quantum-classical optimisation algorithms for changing power-grid conditions. Your work may include coding computational models, setting up simulations, checking experimental results and documenting what the team learns. You will also support research papers and coordinate with specialists working in power systems and quantum computing.

Senior Research Fellow

You will take a stronger role in modelling real-time Optimal Power Flow problems and testing them on hybrid quantum-classical systems. You may guide parts of the experimental workflow, interpret results, improve technical documentation and help turn the project findings into publishable research. Collaboration across software, mathematical modelling and power-engineering work is a central part of the role.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project term: the research programme runs for three years, and the appointments are tied to this funded project.
  • Alternative project category: applicants without the prescribed GATE, NET or equivalent condition may be considered under another suitable project-staff category, depending on institute rules and funds.
  • Reservation: Government of India reservation and relaxation rules apply wherever relevant.
  • Shortlisting: only shortlisted applicants will receive further communication about the selection process.
  • Institute decision: IIT Ropar may leave some or all posts unfilled if project needs or the pool of suitable candidates change.

Application Submission Notes

Use the online form linked in the official advertisement and enter complete, accurate information. The form also asks you to upload the supporting records it specifies, so keep clear digital copies ready before you begin. Applications are handled through the project form rather than by post.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and test hybrid quantum-classical optimisation algorithms for dynamic power grids
  • Model real-time Optimal Power Flow problems and run system simulations
  • Build computational models and conduct project experiments
  • Analyse simulation and experimental results for technical findings
  • Prepare research papers, project reports and technical documents
  • Collaborate with power-system, quantum-computing and cross-functional researchers
