NIT Calicut Junior Research Fellow Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post
National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut), through its Office of Research and Consultancy, has announced a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position on a contract basis for a research project in Chemical Engineering. The project, funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), focuses on developing a catalyst system for producing sustainable liquid fuels (C8-C18) from lignocellulosic biomass, along with real-time performance evaluation in Compression Ignition (CI) engines. This is a project-based contract role, initially for one year and extendable until the project concludes. Selection will be done through a hybrid interview on 4th May 2026.
Who Can Apply?
Essential Qualification (Option 1)
- M.Tech / M.E. / M.S. (by Research) / M.Sc or an equivalent postgraduate degree in Engineering or Technology
- Must be qualified in CSIR-UGC NET or GATE
Essential Qualification (Option 2)
- B.Tech / B.E. or Integrated professional degree in the same field of expertise
- Must have First Class (60% marks or 6.5 CGPA)
- Must be qualified in CSIR-UGC NET or GATE
Desirable Knowledge
- Heat transfer, Fuels and Energy
- IC engines and Engine Design
- Catalyst science and Biomass to Biofuels conversion
- Reaction Engineering and thermochemical conversion methods
- Experience with sophisticated laboratory instruments
Note: The institute may relax qualification and experience requirements for candidates with exceptional credentials.

Salary
- Consolidated monthly pay: Rs. 37,000 per month
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): 20% of basic pay (Rs. 7,400 per month)
- Total in-hand: approximately Rs. 44,400 per month
- No TA/DA is paid for appearing in the interview
Selection Process

- Hybrid Interview: Shortlisted candidates are invited for a hybrid (online + in-person) interview scheduled on 4th May 2026. Final selection is based on interview performance.

Responsibilities
- Carry out experimental research on catalyst synthesis for converting lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels
- Perform characterisation of catalysts using sophisticated laboratory instruments
- Conduct performance evaluation of biofuels in Compression Ignition (CI) engines
- Analyse data and prepare research reports and presentations for the project team
- Assist the Principal Investigator in writing research papers and project progress reports
- Maintain laboratory records, equipment logs, and safety protocols
- Participate in project review meetings and present research findings
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
M.Tech / M.E. / M.Sc (PG in Engineering/Technology) with CSIR-UGC NET or GATE; OR B.Tech/B.E. with First Class (60%/6.5 CGPA) with CSIR-UGC NET or GATE
Preferred Qualification
Knowledge in Heat transfer, Fuels, Energy, IC engines, Catalyst, Biomass to Biofuels, Reaction Engineering, thermochemical conversion methods
Required Skills
GATE or CSIR-UGC NET qualified; knowledge in Chemical Engineering; familiarity with sophisticated instruments
Age Limit
18 - 30 years
Salary & Compensation
Pay Scale
Rs. 37,000/- per month consolidated + 20% HRA (project-based contract pay)
Allowances
20% HRA on basic pay (Rs. 7,400 per month). No TA/DA for interview.

Exam Pattern
There is no written examination for this JRF post. Selection is done in two stages:
- Stage 1 — Application Screening: Submitted CVs and supporting documents are reviewed. Shortlisted candidates are informed by email.
- Stage 2 — Hybrid Interview (4th May 2026): The interview is conducted in a hybrid format (both online and in-person modes). Final selection is based on the candidate's performance in the interview.
