IITD JRF Energy Science Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) through its Industrial Research & Development (IRD) Unit for a project in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. The project, Performance Evaluation and Design Optimization of Glass Industry Furnaces for Improved Combustion & Fuel Saving Potentials (RP05099N), is funded by Gold Plus Float Glass Private Limited and led by Prof. S. K. Tyagi.

The goal is to cut energy use and emissions in glass furnaces. The team will recover waste heat from hot exhaust gases and test replacing part of the fossil fuel with biomass or hydrogen blends. Indian glass furnaces use far more energy per tonne of glass than the global average, so this is hands-on work with a real industry partner.

The fellowship suits an M.Tech graduate in Mechanical, Thermal, Energy or Chemical Engineering who enjoys CFD modelling, furnace design and data analysis and wants to build a PhD around an industrial problem.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Contract: the appointment is contractual with consolidated pay, renewed every year or up to the project's duration, whichever is earlier. The project runs from October 2026 to September 2030.
• PhD route: you will be encouraged to register for a PhD at IIT Delhi under institute rules. If you are admitted, your PhD topic will be linked to this project.
• Industry deputation: after the PhD coursework, you will be deputed to the industry site at Kanagala (Belgaum), Karnataka for data collection and analysis. Modelling and optimisation can be done through CFD simulation.
• Non-disclosure agreement: you must sign an NDA with the industry partner before you start working on the project.
• Industry absorption: the notice says there is a very high chance of being absorbed by the industry after two or more years of experience on this project.
• Shortlisting: IIT Delhi may set higher criteria for shortlisting. Shortlisted names appear at ird.iitd.ac.in/shortlisted along with the online interview details, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted.

• Prepare 3-D drawings of the existing glass furnace and record its design dimensions
• Study the thermal performance and emission characteristics of the furnace at Gold Plus Float Glass
• Build heat and mass transfer models using CFD simulation
• Validate simulation results against experimental observations from the furnace
• Test different insulating materials to improve furnace performance at the Belagavi plant
• Collect and analyse operating data at the industry site
