IIT Delhi is hiring Assistant Professors (Grade I and Grade II) on a rolling basis across 21 academic units -- including Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemistry, Mathematics, Management Studies, the Yardi School of AI, and the School of Public Policy. If you have a Ph.D. in the relevant area with first class in your preceding degree, you can apply online before 30 June 2026, 23:59 IST. Starting salary is Rs. 70,900 per month for Grade II and Rs. 1,01,500 per month for Grade I, going up to Rs. 2,04,700 per month at Pay Level 13A1.

Who Can Apply?

Minimum Qualification (All Posts)

• Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in the preceding degree, in the appropriate area or branch
• Consistently good academic record throughout
• First class with minimum 70% marks or CGPA of 7.0/10 throughout in all degrees previous to PhD
• At least 4 refereed conference/journal papers, of which at least 2 should be in reputed journals
• Demonstrated ability to teach and communicate well

Assistant Professor Grade I

• Ph.D. plus at least 3 years of industrial, research or teaching experience (experience gained while pursuing Ph.D. is excluded)

Assistant Professor Grade II

• Ph.D. with less than 3 years of industrial, research or teaching experience

Foreign Nationals

• Foreign nationals are appointed on contract basis, initially for 5 years; renewable after the 5-year tenure ends. Half-time appointments are possible for non-OCI foreign nationals. Work visa from Government of India is required.

Individual academic units may have additional shortlisting criteria -- please check Annexure-1 of the notification for your department.

Age Limit

• Preferred age: Below 35 years for male candidates and 38 years for female candidates
• Age Relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST and persons with benchmark disability; 3 years for OBC-NCL
• Any further relaxation in age will be applicable as per Government of India norms

Salary

• Assistant Professor Grade-I: 7th CPC Pay Level 12 -- minimum starting pay Rs. 1,01,500 per month (scale Rs. 1,01,500-1,67,400). After 3 years, the incumbent moves to Academic Pay Level 13A1 (Rs. 1,31,400-2,04,700)
• Assistant Professor Grade-II: 7th CPC Pay Level 10 -- minimum starting pay Rs. 70,900 per month (scale Rs. 57,700-98,200). After 1 year of experience, the incumbent moves to Academic Pay Level 11. Subsequent placement to Grade-I is based on experience requirements
• A higher starting salary may be offered in deserving cases as decided by the Selection Committee
• Allowances: Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), telephone reimbursement, Children Education Allowance, LTC, and contribution towards New Pension Scheme (NPS)
• Faculty are eligible for Young Faculty Incentive Fellowship for 3 years from joining (or until promotion to Pay Level 13A1, whichever is earlier)
• Start-up Grant: Up to Rs. 20 Lakhs for research over 3 years; an additional Rs. 30 Lakhs matching equipment grant is available via special project funding
• Professional Development Allowance (PDA): Rs. 3 Lakhs every 3 years for conferences, memberships, and contingent expenses
• Relocation: Up to Rs. 2,50,000 (from abroad) or Rs. 1,25,000 (within India) plus economy-class airfare; minimum 3-year service condition
• Accommodation: Lease support up to Rs. 60,500 per month rental until campus quarters are allotted

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

Selection is based entirely on merit and expert evaluation. There is no written exam.

1. Application Screening: Applications are reviewed against department-specific shortlisting criteria -- publication record, academic background, research experience, and teaching ability
2. Interview by Selection Committee: Shortlisted candidates are called for personal interview at IIT Delhi. The interview includes a research presentation and a discussion of teaching plans
3. Travel Reimbursement: Outstation candidates within India are reimbursed 2-Tier AC railway fare or economy class airfare by the shortest route. Candidates coming from abroad are reimbursed up to Rs. 40,000 or actual fare, whichever is less. Air tickets must be booked through Balmer Lawrie, Ashoka Travels, or IRCTC

The Institute may consider candidates whose specialisation lies outside the listed areas if their record is outstanding. Meeting minimum eligibility does not vest any right to be called for interview.
