GSL Technical Assistant Recruitment 2026: Overview

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a Schedule 'A' Mini Ratna company under the Ministry of Defence, is hiring for 20 kinds of Non-Executive posts at its yard in Vasco-da-Gama, Goa. GSL designs and builds ships for the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign countries, so the work here is hands-on shipbuilding and ship repair.

Every post is on a fixed term contract of three years, which GSL can stretch by two more years. Technical Assistant posts in five engineering disciplines make up the largest share, but there are also openings for diploma supervisors, ITI tradesmen, a Hindi translator, male nurses and a steward cum cook. Every post asks for at least two years of relevant work experience, so this drive suits people already working in a shipyard, port, power utility or workshop.

Posts and Disciplines

• Assistant Superintendent (Hindi Translator): handles Hindi-English translation work; the single post is reserved for OBC (NCL).
• Junior Supervisor (Safety-Electrical) and Junior Supervisor (Substation): supervisory posts for electrical diploma holders, the substation post also needing a valid 33KV supervisor licence.
• Technical Assistant (Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, Shipbuilding, Instrumentation, Civil): diploma-level technical posts in the yard; one Mechanical post is based at the GSL Mumbai office, and the Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics and Shipbuilding streams each carry a post reserved for PwBD candidates.
• Nurse (Male): for B.Sc Nursing or Nursing and Midwifery diploma holders.
• Skilled trades: Shipwright Fitter, Welder, Instrument Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Khalasi, Safety Steward and EOT Crane Operator, mostly for SSC plus ITI or trade-certificate holders with shipbuilding experience.
• Semi-skilled posts: 3G Welder, Painter and Steward cum Cook; the cook post looks for experienced cooks from Armed Forces officers' messes or Indian Navy ships.

Post-wise Duties

Junior Supervisor (Substation)

You will look after the operation and maintenance of substations, transformers and switchgear, along with load management and power distribution inside the yard.

EOT Crane Operator

You will operate and maintain electrically operated and level-luffing cranes, fix breakdowns in their power, PLC and control circuits, and service parts like slip ring units, VCBs and cable reel drums. You must be fit enough to climb and work at heights when a crane breaks down.

Steward cum Cook

You will plan menus and cook Indian, Continental and Chinese food, lay the table for officers' lunches and dinners, estimate food needs, and keep the accounts and inventory for the industrial canteen, lunch rooms and guest house, including guest entries and bills.

Assistant Superintendent (Hindi Translator)

You will translate documents from Hindi to English and back for the company.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: The contract ends automatically after three years unless GSL extends it, one year at a time; the total can never cross five years.
• Shift work: Every post except the Hindi Translator involves working in shifts.
• Posting liability: You can be posted to any GSL unit, project site or office, on board ships, or anywhere in India or abroad, and GSL can move you to a different position from the one you were selected for.
• Diploma is a must for Technical Assistants: B.E./B.Tech holders without the diploma will not be considered.
• Pay terms: The pay is a consolidated monthly amount that rises each contract year; PF, ESI and income tax are deducted from it. You also get medical benefits, canteen, welfare facilities and Group Personal Accident Insurance.
• No carry-over from old jobs: There is no pay protection or transfer of service benefits from a previous government or PSU job. An NOC is not needed, but you must show a relieving letter before joining.
• Internal candidates: GSL apprentices, advance trainees, current GSL staff and recent ex-employees get extra weightage in the skill test under GSL rules.
• Reserved candidates on UR posts: If you apply for a UR post where your category has no reserved vacancy, you are treated as General with no relaxation.
• Travel fare: Outstation candidates who reach the Skill/Trade Test get a to-and-fro sleeper class rail fare; SC/ST candidates get it for the written test too. Wait-listed tickets do not qualify.
• Language: Working knowledge of Konkani or Marathi along with Hindi and English is a plus for almost every post.
