UPSC Geo-Scientist Recruitment 2027: Overview

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is conducting the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination for technical posts in two national earth-science organisations. Geological Survey of India works under the Ministry of Mines, while Central Ground Water Board works under the Ministry of Jal Shakti's Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. The same examination serves geology, geophysics, chemistry and hydrogeology streams, with separate merit and preference-based allocation for participating services.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Geology: Geologist and Assistant Geologist roles in Geological Survey of India cover mapping, mineral investigation and earth-science fieldwork.
  • Geophysics: Assistant Geophysicist roles in Geological Survey of India and Scientist B or Assistant Geophysicist roles in Central Ground Water Board use physical measurements and subsurface interpretation.
  • Chemistry: Chemist and Assistant Chemist posts in both organisations focus on laboratory analysis of rocks, minerals, water and related samples.
  • Hydrogeology: Scientist B and Assistant Hydrogeologist posts in Central Ground Water Board deal with aquifers, groundwater assessment and water-resource studies.

Post-wise Duties

Geologist and Assistant Geologist

You will carry out geological surveys, field mapping and sample-based studies for Geological Survey of India. The role can involve difficult terrain, systematic field notes and technical reports that support mineral and regional geology programmes.

Geophysics Posts

You will collect and interpret gravity, magnetic, electrical, seismic or borehole data according to the assigned organisation. Your findings help teams understand subsurface structures, mineral prospects and groundwater systems.

Chemistry Posts

You will analyse rock, mineral and water samples, operate laboratory instruments and check the quality of test results. Clear analytical records are important because the data feeds scientific investigations and resource assessments.

Hydrogeology Posts

You will study aquifers, wells and groundwater conditions through field observations, pumping data and hydrogeological interpretation. Work may include groundwater exploration, recharge assessment, mapping and advice for water-resource planning.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Initial appointment: the notice states that appointments are made on a temporary basis at first, even though these are direct-recruitment government service posts.
  • Service preference: you must list at least one participating service for which you are qualified; UPSC will not consider you for a service omitted from your preference order.
  • Stream restriction: candidates with certain common geoscience qualifications may choose geology or geophysics, but can apply under only one of those streams.
  • Field suitability: the interview assesses your ability to adapt to field life, and final appointment remains subject to the physical and medical standards of the allocated service.
  • Reservation claims: category and disability benefits depend on valid certificates held by the closing date and the functional requirements identified for the relevant post.

Application Submission Notes

The UPSC application system uses Account Creation, Universal Registration Number, Common Application Form and an examination-specific module. Prepare your supporting certificates before opening the form, because claims about age, education, category and disability may need document uploads.

You must upload a clear photograph and a three-signature image made with black ink on white paper. Keep your Universal Registration Number and examination-specific Application Number safe; a submitted examination form cannot be withdrawn or edited.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geological, geophysical, chemical, or hydrogeological investigations in the assigned service
  • Collect field observations, survey readings, and representative scientific samples
  • Analyse rocks, minerals, groundwater, and subsurface data with suitable methods
  • Operate, check, and care for laboratory or field instruments used in investigations
  • Prepare maps, logs, technical notes, databases, and scientific reports
  • Interpret findings for mineral exploration, groundwater assessment, and resource planning
  • Follow field safety, sample control, data quality, and government reporting standards
