About This Job

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released notification for 44 Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) posts. Candidates with PG in Economics (IES) or Statistics degree (ISS) can apply online. Last date to apply is 3rd March 2026. Age limit is 21 to 30 years. Salary is Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the IES/ISS Examination 2026 to fill 44 Group A posts in the Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service. This is a great chance for candidates with a background in Economics or Statistics to join the Central Government.

Who Can Apply

  • For IES: You need a Post Graduate degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, or Econometrics from a recognized university.
  • For ISS: You need a Bachelor's degree with Statistics as one of the subjects, or a Master's degree in Statistics from a recognized university.
  • Age: 21 to 30 years as on 1st August 2026.
  • Age relaxation: SC/ST candidates get 5 years, OBC get 3 years, and PwBD candidates get 10 years.
  • Freshers can apply. No experience needed.

  • Indian Economic Service (IES): 16 posts
  • Indian Statistical Service (ISS): 28 posts

Salary and Benefits

You will get a salary of Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month under Pay Level 10 (7th CPC). Along with the basic pay, you will also get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA), CGHS medical facility, and Leave Travel Concession (LTC).

Responsibilities

  • Work on economic policy research, analysis, and planning for the Government of India
  • Prepare economic reports, statistical data analysis, and policy briefs
  • Help in planning and implementing government economic and statistical programmes
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data for national surveys and reports
  • Advise senior officials on economic and statistical matters
  • Coordinate with state governments and other departments on data collection

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

IES: PG in Economics/Applied Economics/Econometrics. ISS: Bachelor's with Statistics or Master's in Statistics from recognized university.

Exam Pattern

The selection has two stages: Written Exam (1,000 marks) and Interview (200 marks), making a total of 1,200 marks.

IES Exam Pattern (All papers are subjective/descriptive)

  • General English: 100 marks
  • General Studies: 100 marks
  • General Economics I: 200 marks
  • General Economics II: 200 marks
  • General Economics III: 200 marks
  • Indian Economics: 200 marks
  • Total: 1,000 marks (6 papers)

Note: There is no negative marking in IES papers.

ISS Exam Pattern

  • General English: 100 marks (descriptive)
  • General Studies: 100 marks (descriptive)
  • Statistics Paper I: 200 marks (objective, 80 questions)
  • Statistics Paper II: 200 marks (objective, 80 questions)
  • Statistics Paper III: 200 marks (descriptive)
  • Statistics Paper IV: 200 marks (descriptive)
  • Total: 1,000 marks (6 papers)

Note: ISS objective papers (Statistics I and II) have negative marking of 1/3 marks for each wrong answer.

Interview

200 marks. Candidates who pass the written exam will be called for interview.
