Supreme Court Court Master (Shorthand) Recruitment 2026: Overview
The Supreme Court of India, through its Recruitment Cell, wants to fill Court Master (Shorthand) posts in New Delhi on a deputation basis. This is not an open recruitment for freshers — only stenographers already working in a High Court or a District Court can apply. The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has put the advertisement on its own website so that its staff and the staff of the District Courts under it know about the opening.
A Court Master sits in the courtroom with the judges and takes down orders and judgments in English shorthand at high speed. If you are a Private Secretary, Senior PA, PA or Senior Stenographer with steady shorthand and wish to work at the country's top court for a few years, this is a rare chance. The count of posts is described as tentative, so the final number can change.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Who can apply: Only regular employees of High Courts and District Courts. You must either hold a post equal to Court Master on a regular basis, or have at least five years of regular service in the Private Secretary, Senior PA, PA or Senior Stenographer cadre.
- Deputation term: You join for one year at first, and this can be stretched up to three years.
- Earlier deputation counts: If you are already on deputation in another ex-cadre post just before this one, that period is added in, and the total should normally not cross three years.
- Pay fixation: Your pay on deputation is fixed under the Government of India's deputation rules in force at the time.
- Service record check: For everyone who clears the shorthand test, the ACRs/APARs of the last five years and the vigilance clearance are placed before the panel during the interaction round.
- Release by your court: Your High Court forwards your form only if it can spare your services in case you are selected.
- Rejection rule: Forms that skip the proper channel, miss documents or photographs, are unsigned or are incomplete in any way will be rejected.
Application Submission Notes
You apply in the prescribed proforma attached to the advertisement, not online. The form goes to the Recruitment Cell, Supreme Court of India, Tilak Marg, New Delhi 110001 through your employer, along with your ACRs/APARs and vigilance clearance.
- High Court staff: Your High Court forwards the form. High Courts can send applications to the Supreme Court Registry up to 31 October 2026.
- District Court staff: Route your form through the concerned High Court — do not send it straight to the Supreme Court.
- Email copy: Scanned copies can be emailed to recruitment.cell@sci.nic.in for early scrutiny, but the proforma and original documents must still follow by post.
Paste a recent passport-size photograph on the form, fill in your full experience history in date order, and sign the declaration before you hand it over.
