Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has released notification for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) posts across all Indian Railway zones under CEN 01/2026. Candidates who have passed 10th (Matriculation) with ITI or Engineering Diploma can apply online. Last date to apply is 14 June 2026. Salary ranges from Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200 per month under Level-2 of the 7th CPC.

Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Assistant Loco Pilot Recruitment 2026 — 11,127 Posts

Indian Railways, through its Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), has announced a massive recruitment drive for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot positions under Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) No. 01/2026. The vacancies are spread across all railway zones and production units in the country. This is one of the largest ALP recruitment drives in recent years, offering a great opportunity for ITI and Diploma holders to join Indian Railways in a technical role. Both freshers and experienced candidates with the right trade qualification can apply.

Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification:

You need to meet one of the following qualification requirements:

  • 10th (Matriculation) + ITI from a recognised NCVT/SCVT institution in any of these trades: Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Heat Engine, Instrument Mechanic, Machinist, Millwright Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic Radio and TV, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Mechanic, Turner, Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, or Armature and Coil Winder.
  • 10th (Matriculation) + Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in any of the trades listed above under the Apprenticeship Act, 1961.
  • 10th (Matriculation) + 3-year Diploma in Engineering in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering from a recognised institution.

Nationality:

  • You must be an Indian citizen. Citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugee communities settled in India before 01 January 1962 are also eligible.

Age Limit

  • You should be between 18 and 30 years old as on 01 July 2026.
  • SC/ST: 5 years relaxation (upper age limit becomes 35 years)
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years relaxation (upper age limit becomes 33 years)
  • Ex-Servicemen (UR/EWS): 3 years after deduction of military service from age
  • Ex-Servicemen (OBC): 6 years after deduction of military service from age
  • Ex-Servicemen (SC/ST): 8 years after deduction of military service from age
  • Serving Railway Staff (UR/EWS): Up to 40 years if you have 3+ years of service
  • Serving Railway Staff (OBC): Up to 43 years
  • Serving Railway Staff (SC/ST): Up to 45 years
  • Widowed/Divorced Women (UR/EWS): Up to 35 years
  • Course Completed Act Apprentices (completed before age 25): Up to 35 years (UR/EWS), 38 years (OBC), 40 years (SC/ST)

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get a salary of Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200 per month under Level-2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix.
  • The initial basic pay starts at Rs. 19,900 per month.
  • You will also get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Running Allowance, Transport Allowance, and other benefits as per Indian Railways rules.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in 5 stages:

  1. CBT-1 (First Stage Computer Based Test): This is a screening test with 75 questions for 75 marks to be completed in 60 minutes. It covers Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness. There is negative marking of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer. Your CBT-1 score is only used for shortlisting and does not count in the final merit.
  2. CBT-2 (Second Stage Computer Based Test): This test has two parts. Part A covers Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, and General Awareness. Part B tests your knowledge of the specific trade you selected during application. Part A marks count toward the final merit, while Part B is qualifying in nature.
  3. CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): This test checks your aptitude for the role of Loco Pilot. It evaluates memory, following directions, attention to detail, and ability to process information quickly. You need to score the minimum qualifying marks to move forward.
  4. Document Verification: Your original certificates, caste certificate, age proof, educational qualifications, and other documents will be verified.
  5. Medical Examination: You must pass a stringent medical fitness test. ALP posts require A2 medical standard, which includes good vision (distant vision 6/6, 6/9 without glasses), normal color vision, and overall physical fitness.

  3. Register by entering your name, mobile number, email ID, and Aadhaar number.
  4. Log in with your credentials and fill the application form with personal details, educational qualification, choice of RRB zone, and exam centre preference.
  5. Upload your passport-size colour photograph, signature, and required documents in the specified format.
  6. Pay the application fee through online mode.
  7. Review your entire application carefully, submit it, and download the acknowledgement for your records.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Loco Pilot in operating and driving trains safely on assigned routes
  • Monitor locomotive instruments, gauges, and signals during the journey
  • Handle minor technical issues and perform basic troubleshooting of the locomotive
  • Maintain the locomotive in good working condition and report defects to the maintenance team
  • Follow all railway safety rules, signal protocols, and standard operating procedures
  • Keep accurate records of train movements, fuel consumption, and duty logs
  • Work in rotating shifts including night duties, weekends, and holidays as per the railway schedule

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

10th (Matriculation) + ITI (NCVT/SCVT) in relevant trade OR 3-year Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile)

Preferred Qualification

Candidates with Act Apprenticeship completion in relevant trades are also eligible

Exam Pattern

The RRB ALP selection has 3 computer-based tests followed by document verification and medical examination.

CBT-1 (First Stage — Screening Test)

  • Total Questions: 75
  • Total Marks: 75
  • Duration: 60 minutes (80 minutes for PwBD candidates)
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd of marks allotted per question deducted for each wrong answer
  • Subjects:
  • Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, fractions, decimals, percentage, ratio, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance, algebra, geometry, trigonometry
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, series, coding-decoding, puzzles, blood relations, directions, Venn diagrams, data interpretation
  • General Science: Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences (up to 10th standard level)
  • General Awareness: Current affairs, Indian geography, history, polity, economy, sports, important dates

Note: CBT-1 is only for shortlisting. Your score here does not count in the final merit list.

CBT-2 (Second Stage)

  • Part A: Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, General Awareness — marks count toward final merit
  • Part B: Trade-specific questions based on the trade you selected — qualifying in nature
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes (Part A + Part B combined)
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd of marks per question

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)

  • Purpose: Tests your aptitude for the Loco Pilot role
  • Areas Tested: Memory, following directions, attention to detail, ability to process information
  • Nature: Qualifying — you must meet the minimum cutoff marks

Exam Language: English, Hindi, and regional languages as per RRB zone

Exam Type: Computer Based Test (CBT) — Objective multiple-choice questions
