NPOL JRF Recruitment 2026: Overview

Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a DRDO laboratory under the Ministry of Defence at Kochi, Kerala, is inviting candidates for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions across seven engineering and science disciplines — Computer Science, Mechanical, Chemical/Polymer/Materials Science, Opto Electronics, Electrical/Electronics/Instrumentation, Physics, and Oceanography/Meteorology. Selection is entirely through a walk-in interview, with no written exam. Fresh postgraduates or graduates with a valid GATE/NET score in the relevant discipline can attend, and NPOL will draw up a one-year panel from the candidates it finds suitable. This kind of open, multi-discipline JRF drive is uncommon among DRDO labs — it gives candidates from seven different engineering and science backgrounds a single, direct route into naval defence research without going through a written exam.

• Mechanical Engineering: 4 confirmed vacancies, same qualification pattern.
• Chemical Engineering / Rubber Technology / Polymer Technology / Nanotechnology / Materials Science: anticipated vacancy.
• Opto Electronics: anticipated vacancy, including Electrical & Electronics/Electronics & Communication graduates with a paper in Fibre Optics/Optoelectronics/Laser Technologies.
• Electrical & Electronics / Electronics & Communication / Instrumentation Engineering: anticipated vacancy.
• Physics: anticipated vacancy, for a Post Graduate degree in Basic Science with valid NET/GATE.
• Oceanography / Ocean Technology / Meteorology: anticipated vacancy, same Post Graduate/NET-GATE pattern.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Anticipated vacancies: most disciplines have no fixed vacancy count — NPOL draws a one-year panel and offers fellowships as vacancies arise; empanelment alone does not guarantee a fellowship.
• Fellowship tenure: awarded initially for two years, extendable as per rules.
• Government channel: candidates already working in Government/PSU/autonomous bodies must apply through proper channel.
• No absorption: the JRF offer does not entitle you to any right of absorption into DRDO.
• Foreign degrees: candidates with a qualification from a foreign university must submit an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities, Delhi.
• Equivalence and relevance: the Director, NPOL has final say on whether a candidate's qualification is equivalent and relevant to the Laboratory.
• Updates: any amendment to the selection process is published only on the DRDO website (www.drdo.gov.in), so keep checking it until the process concludes.

There is no online application — you simply walk in for the interview at Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya, NPOL campus, Thrikkakara P.O., Kochi 682021 on 10 October 2026 at 9:30 AM, carrying your original certificates, self-attested copies, ID proof and one recent passport photo. You are advised to e-mail a one-page bio-data to hrd.npol@gov.in in advance so NPOL can make administrative arrangements for your interview.

• Maintain accurate lab records, data logs and experiment notebooks
• Assist in preparing technical reports, papers and project documentation
• Operate and calibrate laboratory equipment relevant to the discipline
• Support literature review and data analysis for ongoing DRDO projects
