The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs is filling 21 posts of Public Prosecutor (PP) on deputation basis, including short-term contract (ISTC), at its Headquarters and Regional/Zonal Offices across India. If you are a serving Law Officer or Public Prosecutor in Central/State Government service with a Bachelor's Degree in Law and 7 years of criminal practice, you can apply through proper channel. This is an open, continuously running vacancy circular — there is no single last date. Salary is at Pay Level 10, Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month as per the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.

NCB, the apex central law enforcement agency for drug law enforcement under the Ministry of Home Affairs, needs experienced legal officers to prosecute cases under the NDPS Act at its Headquarters and Regional/Zonal Offices. This vacancy circular invites applications from Law Officers of the Central Government or agencies like NIA, CBI, ED, Public Prosecutors of State Governments/UTs, or legal officers from Autonomous/Statutory Organizations, PSUs, or recognized universities/research institutions. This is a deputation-only posting — it is not open to fresh law graduates or private practicing advocates who are not already in a government/PSU/university legal role. Officers with prior NDPS case experience are preferred. Recruitment is done 100% by deputation, including short-term contract, and the circular will be circulated by NCB to eligible officers across parent cadres and departments.
Who Can Apply?
- Service Eligibility (any one): You should be holding an analogous post on a regular basis in your parent cadre/department; OR have 2 years of regular service in a post in Level-9 of the Pay Matrix (or equivalent) in your parent cadre; OR have 4 years of regular service in a post in Level-8 of the Pay Matrix (or equivalent) in your parent cadre.
- Qualification: You must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Law from a recognized university, with 7 years of practice as an Advocate conducting criminal cases.
- Preferred: 3 years of experience as an Advocate specifically in NDPS Act cases.
- Eligible Sources: Law Officers from the Central Government or Central agencies (NIA, CBI, ED, etc.), Public Prosecutors of State Governments/UTs, or legal officers from Autonomous/Statutory Organizations, PSUs, or recognized universities/research institutions.
Age Limit
- The maximum age limit for appointment by deputation (including short-term contract) is 56 years as on the closing date of receipt of applications.
- Your total period of deputation (including short-term contract) in an ex-cadre post immediately preceding this appointment, in the same or another Central Government organization, cannot exceed 3 years.
Salary
- The post of Public Prosecutor carries pay in PB-3 (Rs. 15,600-39,100) + Grade Pay Rs. 5,400 (pre-revised), equivalent to Level-10, Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month under the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.
- You will also get DA, HRA, TA and other central government allowances as per deputation norms (DoPT OM No. 6/8/2009-Estt.(Pay II) dated 17.06.2010, as amended).
Selection Process
There is no written exam for this deputation post. Selection is based on scrutiny of your application and service record:
- Application Screening: NCB reviews your Bio-data/CV, educational certificates, and eligibility against the criteria listed above.
- Service Record Check: Your APARs (last 5 years), integrity certificate, vigilance clearance and penalty statement (last 10 years) are examined.
- Cadre Clearance: Your parent department must confirm you will be relieved to join NCB on deputation if selected.
Note: Once selected, you cannot withdraw your candidature. If you fail to join after selection, you will be debarred from future deputation to NCB.

- Prosecute NDPS Act cases before criminal courts on behalf of NCB
- Prepare case briefs, legal opinions and prosecution strategy for narcotics cases
- Coordinate with NCB investigating officers on evidence and case documentation
- Represent NCB during trial proceedings, bail hearings and appeals
- Review chargesheets and prosecution complaints for legal soundness
- Liaise with the Directorate of Enforcement, CBI and other agencies on joint prosecutions
- Advise NCB Headquarters or Zonal/Regional Offices on NDPS Act legal matters
