Maharashtra Law and Judiciary Department Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor Recruitment 2026

The Government of Maharashtra, through the Law and Judiciary Department, Mantralaya, has released a notice dated 21 May 2026 inviting applications for Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor posts at three benches of the Bombay High Court — Original Side, Appellate Side and Appellate Side (Writ Cell). All appointments are on a purely temporary basis and governed by the Maharashtra Law Officers Rules, 1984. Practising advocates with at least 7 years of High Court experience can apply.

Who Can Apply?

For Additional Government Pleader / Additional Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor

  • You must be a Citizen of India.
  • You must hold a Law degree from any recognised university.
  • You must be enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
  • You must have at least 10 years of practice as an Advocate ordinarily in the High Court, certified by the Registrar or Prothonotary & Senior Master.

For Assistant Government Pleader / Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor

  • You must be a Citizen of India.
  • You must hold a Law degree from any recognised university.
  • You must be enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
  • You must have at least 7 years of practice as an Advocate ordinarily in the High Court.

Age Limit

  • Additional Government Pleader / Additional Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor: Maximum 58 years on the date of advertisement.
  • Assistant Government Pleader / Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor: Maximum 55 years on the date of advertisement.
  • Age Relaxation: The upper age limit of 58 years can be relaxed by 2 years for those working on the date of advertisement as Government Pleader/Public Prosecutor or Additional GP/APP in the High Court.
  • Age Relaxation: The upper age limit of 55 years can be relaxed by 5 years for those working on the date of advertisement as Assistant Government Pleaders in the High Court.

Salary

  • Remuneration will be paid as per the Maharashtra Law Officers (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Remuneration) Rules, 1984.
  • The actual fees and conditions are governed by the rules in force at the time of appointment.

Selection Process

Selection will be done in the following stages:

  1. Scrutiny of Applications: The Government of Maharashtra in the Law and Judiciary Department reserves the right to shortlist eligible candidates after scrutiny.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview.
  3. Final Appointment: Based on interview performance and verification of credentials.

Canvassing or pressurising in any manner will result in disqualification.

  2. Fill in the application in the prescribed format. Separate applications are needed for each post applied for.
  3. Attach self-attested photocopies of all required documents, including the SANAD (Bar Council enrolment certificate) and the High Court practice certificate.
  4. Attach a Character Certificate issued by any two Senior Advocates or Senior Counsels.
  5. Affix a recent passport-size photograph with your signature on the form.
  6. Write "Application for (post name) and (side for which applied)" clearly on the envelope.
  7. Send the application by post (offline only) to: The Registry, Law and Judiciary Department, Room No. 345, 3rd Floor, Annex Building, Mantralaya, Mumbai-400032.
  8. Address the application to the Principal Secretary & RLA, Law & Judiciary Department, Mumbai.
  9. Applications must reach the address on or before 19 June 2026 during office hours (up to 6:15 P.M.).

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Government of Maharashtra in cases before the High Court of Judicature at Bombay
  • Handle civil suits, writ petitions and appeals on behalf of the State
  • Conduct criminal prosecutions as Additional Public Prosecutor when assigned
  • Draft pleadings, written statements, replies and applications for the State
  • Advise the government on legal matters and complex litigation strategy
  • Appear before benches of the High Court on the Original, Appellate or Writ side
  • Maintain confidentiality of government records and litigation strategy

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Degree in Law from any recognised university and enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.

Preferred Qualification

Practising advocate ordinarily in the High Court of Bombay with strong civil/criminal litigation record

Required Skills

Civil litigation, criminal prosecution, drafting, courtroom advocacy, legal research, knowledge of CPC and CrPC
