Who Can Apply?

For Rural Home Guard:

  • Qualification: You must have passed at least Class 7th.
  • Residence: You must be a permanent resident of the Deoghar district block from where you are applying.

For Urban Home Guard:

  • Qualification: You must have passed at least Matriculation (10th class).
  • Residence: You must be an ordinary resident of the urban area of Deoghar district.

Technical Skilled Urban Home Guard (Optional Category)

  • You should be skilled in any technical field and currently working or self-employed in a related office.
  • Eligible trades include: doctor, engineer, advocate, professor, nurse, computer operator, typist, licensed driver (HMV/LMV), cook, carpenter, mochi, dhobi, barber, electrician, gardener, plumber and similar.

Age Limit

  • You should be between 19 and 40 years old as on 01 January 2026.
  • Age relaxation will follow Jharkhand Government rules for reserved categories.

Salary

  • Home Guard is a volunteer service, not a salaried government job.
  • You will get a daily allowance fixed by the Jharkhand Government for every day you are called on duty.
  • The current per-day rate is decided by the Home Department from time to time.

Physical Standards

For Male Candidates:

  • Height: 162 cm (General/OBC/BC) or 157 cm (SC/ST)
  • Chest: 79 cm (General/OBC/BC) or 76 cm (SC/ST)

For Female Candidates:

  • Height: 148 cm (all categories)

Selection Process

Selection will be done in three stages as per Home Department Notification No. 5442 dated 20-10-2014:

  1. Physical Test (PET): Includes 1 mile run, high jump, long jump and shot put. Each event carries marks. For male rural/non-technical urban candidates the cut-off for 1 mile run is 6 minutes; for females it is 10 minutes.
  2. Hindi Writing Ability Test: Total 100 marks, qualifying marks 30. Standard is 7th class level for rural candidates and 10th class level for urban candidates.
  3. Technical Proficiency Test (Urban Technical category only): Total 100 marks, qualifying marks 30.

After all tests, a merit list is prepared. Selected candidates undergo medical examination, police character verification and basic Home Guard training before final enrolment. Extra marks are given to candidates who have won prizes in National/State level sports (up to 6 marks for National Gold, 3 marks for State Gold).

  • Assist police and district administration in maintaining law and order when called for duty
  • Help in crowd control during festivals, elections, fairs and emergencies
  • Support disaster relief operations like floods, fires and accidents
  • Guard public places, government buildings and important installations
  • Patrol assigned areas with the local police force
  • Assist in traffic management at important junctions
  • Report suspicious activities to the police station in charge
  • Attend basic Home Guard training and refresher courses regularly

Exam Pattern

The Hindi Writing Ability Test carries a total of 100 marks with a qualifying score of 30 marks. The standard is 7th class level for Rural Home Guards and 10th class level for Urban Home Guards.

Physical Test (PET) — Rural / Non-Technical Urban

  • 1 Mile Run (Male): 5 min or less — 20 marks; up to 6 min — 10 marks; over 6 min disqualified.
