ISI Junior Research Assistant Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata is hiring Project-Linked Persons (Junior Research Assistants) for its Linguistic Research Unit (LRU). ISI is an autonomous institute funded by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, but these posts are paid for by a project of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This is a temporary, project-linked job, not a regular post at the institute.

The project is called Vidyaapati: Bidirectional Machine Translation Involving Bengali, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, and Hindi. In simple terms, the team is building translation systems that work in both directions between these five Indian languages. The notice puts heavy weight on Hindi-to-Bengali translation, text processing and text annotation, so expect much of your work to sit on that language pair.

This opening fits you best if you studied computational, corpus or applied linguistics and have already done some hands-on NLP research or development. A sound grip on Bengali and Hindi grammar, vocabulary, syntax, semantics and discourse is part of the core requirement, not an extra. If you have used translation software or NLP toolkits, or have evaluated Hindi-Bengali parallel corpora, you will stand out.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: The appointment lasts only up to 31 March 2027 from the date you join the project.
• No permanent job: You get no claim to permanent employment with the Government of India or ISI Kolkata, and no right to move to another project once this one ends.
• Fixed pay: The monthly pay is a consolidated amount with no other allowances added on top.
• Age relaxation: Besides the usual relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and differently-abled candidates, the notice also allows relaxation for outstanding candidates or those with relevant experience.
• Joining checks: When you join, you must show all original documents and a medical fitness certificate from the Institute's Medical Officer. If you cannot, the offer passes to the next person on the merit list.
• Incomplete CVs: A CV with missing details or without supporting documents is rejected straight away.
• Right not to appoint: ISI may decide not to fill any of the posts.
