IITR JRF Potash Recovery Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is recruiting a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The fellow will work with Principal Investigator Prof. Smitirupa Biswal on a Ministry of Mines-sponsored project titled Recovery of potash values from nepheline syenite and feldspar. It is a focused materials and mineral-processing role for someone interested in experimental recovery routes and process development.

The project brings together metallurgy, materials science and chemistry around an applied mineral-resource problem. Your work will move from laboratory experiments to characterization and then to a practical flow sheet for recovering potash values. That makes the role relevant to candidates who want research exposure spanning experimental design, material analysis and process interpretation.

Experimental results are central to this assignment. You will need to connect what happens during recovery trials with characterization findings, then use both to improve the proposed flow sheet. The work therefore offers a compact research cycle: preparing and running experiments, studying the resulting materials, recording evidence and turning those observations into a process route that the project team can evaluate.

The selected fellow may get an opportunity to enrol in a PhD programme, but the notice presents this as a possibility rather than an assured admission. The project position remains separate from the institute's regular academic admissions process.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project tenure: the position is for 24 months and remains tied to the sponsored research work.
  • Research scope: you will work specifically on potash recovery from nepheline syenite and feldspar under the named principal investigator.
  • PhD possibility: the notice says the selected person may receive a PhD admission opportunity; it does not guarantee admission.
  • Equal merit preference: SC and ST candidates receive preference when qualifications and experience are equal.
  • Interview travel: the institute will not pay TA or DA for attending the interview.
  • Document checking: if called for interview, you must bring your original degree and experience records for verification.

No written test pattern is stated in the notice. The institute asks applicants to check that they meet the project requirements before seeking an interview, and the project team will assess the submitted profile and supporting records.

Application Submission Notes

Send your application by email to the Principal Investigator at smitirupa.biswal@mt.iitr.ac.in. Use a plain-paper application and include a detailed CV that shows your degrees and certificates in chronological order, along with research, industrial and other relevant experience.

Attach attested copies of your degree or qualification certificates and any experience certificate. Keep the originals ready because IIT Roorkee will check them at the interview. The official PDF carries an amended deadline, replacing the earlier date printed beneath it, so use the current deadline shown in the structured dates on this listing.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory experiments for recovering potash values from mineral feedstocks
  • Characterize nepheline syenite, feldspar, intermediate products, and recovered materials
  • Develop and refine a process flow sheet for potash recovery
  • Record experimental conditions, observations, results, and material balances
  • Analyse characterization data and discuss findings with the principal investigator
  • Prepare project updates, technical notes, and research documentation
