IITR JRF Civil Engineering Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is engaging a Junior Research Fellow in its Civil Engineering Department for a research project sponsored by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. The project is developing a scalable, high-resolution way to assess methane emissions from municipal solid-waste landfills and dumpsites. It combines field observations with modelling so the research can move beyond a single instrument or one-time survey.

The work brings together UAV-mounted methane and thermal sensors, satellite measurements from EMIT and TROPOMI, and established IPCC and LandGEM models. These sources will be used to compare emission estimates, understand where landfill methane is concentrated, and study whether captured gas can support useful energy recovery. The broader aim is to connect measurement quality with practical climate and waste-management decisions.

You would join a team led by Prof. Prakhar Misra with Prof. A. A. Kazmi as co-principal investigator. The setting is deliberately interdisciplinary: environmental engineering, remote sensing, atmospheric science, field measurement and computer-based modelling all meet in the same study. Research outputs are expected to include reliable field datasets, technical reports and publication-ready analysis, making the role useful for someone who wants experience across both fieldwork and academic research.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project-linked engagement: this is a contractual research role tied to the sponsored project, not a regular institute appointment. The engagement ends when the project period closes or the project is ended earlier.
  • Shortlisting: IIT Roorkee will contact only shortlisted candidates, and the interview schedule will be shared later by email.
  • Interview expenses: the institute will not pay TA or DA for attending the interview, so you should plan any travel at your own cost.
  • Research pathway: the selected fellow may get an opportunity to seek PhD admission, but the wording is permissive and does not guarantee admission.
  • Equal-merit preference: SC and ST candidates receive preference when qualifications and experience are otherwise equal.
  • Joining checks: appointment remains subject to verification of the original degree, certificate and experience records.

Application Submission Notes

The notice asks you to use the official online form for shortlisting and separately email your cover letter and CV to prakhar.misra@ce.iitr.ac.in. Your CV should include one referee, and the email subject should follow "ANRFCE-JRF-[your name]" so the project team can identify it correctly.

Present your education and any research or industry work in chronological order. Keep clear copies of degree and experience certificates ready, because the institute may ask for them during scrutiny and will check the originals before joining. Use the direct project form and the project email from the notice rather than sending material to the institute's general careers page.

Responsibilities

  • Map methane emissions over landfills and dumpsites using UAV-based sensors
  • Process methane and thermal data collected during field surveys
  • Analyse EMIT and TROPOMI satellite observations for landfill sites
  • Apply IPCC and LandGEM models to build emission estimates
  • Assess landfill gas-to-energy potential and related environmental benefits
  • Collect and organise field data with the research team
  • Prepare technical reports and support research publications
