IIT Patna JRF Physics Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna) is recruiting a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Physics for a time-bound research project led by Prof. Naveen K. Nishchal. The project studies the Transport of Intensity Equation for quantitative phase imaging, an optics method used to recover phase information from recorded intensity measurements. This is a hands-on experimental and computational research role at the institute's Bihta campus rather than a general teaching assignment.

The work brings together optics experiments, quantitative imaging and MATLAB-based analysis. You should be comfortable setting up or supporting optical measurements, organising experimental data and testing analysis methods that turn intensity images into meaningful phase information. Experience in optics is particularly useful because the fellow will work closely with the principal investigator and contribute directly to the project's technical progress.

The assignment is supported through a sponsored research project and carries a provision for the selected fellow to register for a PhD in the research area, subject to the institute's separate academic rules. The fellowship can give you focused research exposure in computational imaging while placing you inside IIT Patna's wider physics and research environment. It is most relevant to candidates who want to build a research profile in optics, imaging or related computational methods.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project status: the JRF appointment is purely time-bound and does not create a right to a permanent institute post.
  • Tenure: the notified assignment is for one year and remains tied to the sponsored research work.
  • PhD provision: the selected fellow may be encouraged to register for doctoral study in this research area, but admission remains subject to IIT Patna's academic requirements.
  • Research preference: prior work in optics can strengthen your application because it connects directly with the experimental focus.
  • Interview travel: IIT Patna does not provide TA or DA for attending the written test or interview.
  • Document check: your academic and qualifying-exam claims must be supported by the certificates, mark sheets and degree records sent with the application.

Application Submission Notes

Send the prescribed application format with your updated resume and supporting certificates, mark sheets and degree copies to Prof. Naveen K. Nishchal, Department of Physics, IIT Patna, Bihta, Patna 801106. The notice also gives nkn@iitp.ac.in for contact with the principal investigator; use the official notice instructions when choosing the delivery method and keep a complete copy of everything you send.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct optics experiments for quantitative phase-imaging research
  • Set up, test and document optical measurement arrangements
  • Analyse experimental images and numerical results in MATLAB
  • Keep accurate laboratory notes, datasets and processing records
  • Review relevant research papers and discuss methods with the project team
  • Prepare technical updates, figures and presentations for the investigator
  • Support project milestones and contribute to research outputs
