IIT Kanpur Junior Research Fellow Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in its Department of Electrical Engineering. The fellow will work on a sponsored research project titled "Developing Indigenous Gravity Energy Storage Technology", which looks at storing electrical energy by lifting and lowering heavy masses — a home-grown alternative to battery storage for the power grid. The project is led from the department by Dr. Gururaj MV.

This is a project-based, contractual fellowship, not a permanent institute post. It suits GATE-qualified electrical engineers who want hands-on research experience, and it can be a strong first step if you plan to move into a PhD later. Candidates who already have research exposure in power systems or energy storage get preference.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Nature of post: The position is purely temporary and on a contract basis, tied to the gravity energy storage project.
• Tenure: The first appointment runs for one year, with a provision to renew it for later years.
• GATE is part of the essential qualification: a B.Tech or M.Tech alone is not enough; you also need a GATE qualification.
• Shortlisting: Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualification and experience will not be informed or called for the interview.
• Interview mode: The interview may be held online or offline. If it is held in person, no TA/DA will be paid for attending.
