The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) is hiring 150 Police Sub-Inspectors (General Closed Cadre) for the Special Branch under the Home (Police) Department, Bihar. The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) has released Advertisement No. 09/2026 for direct recruitment to 150 posts of Police Sub-Inspector (General Closed Cadre) in the Special Branch of the Bihar Police. Both men and women can apply. Bihar's rules give resident women 35% horizontal reservation, and selection is done through a competitive examination. Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must hold a Bachelor's degree (graduation) or an equivalent qualification as on 1 August 2025.
  • Nationality: You must be an Indian citizen. Both male and female candidates can apply.

Age Limit

Your age is counted as on 1 August 2025. The minimum age is 20 years for everyone. The maximum age depends on your category:

  • Unreserved (General) - Male: up to 37 years
  • Unreserved (General) - Female: up to 40 years
  • Backward Class (BC) and Extremely Backward Class (EBC) - Male and Female: up to 40 years
  • SC / ST - Male and Female: up to 42 years
  • Government servants with at least 3 years of regular service get 5 years relaxation. Ex-servicemen get relaxation as per rules, provided their age does not cross 57 years.

Salary

  • Selected Sub-Inspectors are paid under Pay Level-6 (Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 per month) of the 7th Pay Commission.
  • You will also get Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and other allowances as per Bihar Government rules.

Physical Standards

Height, chest and weight carry no marks, but you must meet the minimum standards to stay in the selection. Candidates who fail the physical standards are declared unsuccessful.

  • Height (Male - General / BC): 165 cm
  • Height (Male - EBC / SC / ST): 160 cm
  • Height (Female - all categories): 155 cm

Selection Process

The selection has three main stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination: An objective (OMR) paper with 100 questions for 200 marks in 2 hours. You need at least 30% marks to qualify, and candidates up to about 10 times the vacancies are shortlisted for the Main exam.
  2. Main Examination: Paper I is objective (200 marks, 3 hours) with 0.25 negative marking, and Paper II is descriptive in Hindi and English (50 marks, 1 hour). You must score at least 30% in each paper. About 3 times the vacancies move to the physical test.
  3. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): A qualifying test that checks your physical standards. It carries no marks.
  4. Document Verification

  • Collect and report intelligence for the Special Branch of the Bihar Police
  • Supervise and guide the police personnel placed under your charge
  • Maintain law and order and assist in security duties
  • Prepare case records, reports and other official documents
  • Carry out investigations and field verification as assigned
  • Coordinate with senior officers and other units during operations
  • Ensure the safety of important persons, places and events

Exam Pattern

The selection exam has two stages - a Preliminary exam and a Main exam.

Preliminary Examination

The prelims have 100 questions for 200 marks and you get 2 hours. It is objective (OMR based). You need at least 30% marks to qualify. It covers General Knowledge, Current Affairs, English, Hindi and Reasoning.

Main Examination

  • Paper I (Objective): 200 marks in 3 hours, covering General Studies, Maths, Reasoning, English, Hindi and Bihar General Knowledge. 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
  • Paper II (Descriptive): 50 marks in 1 hour, with essay, precis and translation in Hindi and English.

Qualifying Marks: At least 30% in each paper. Exam Type: Objective (Prelims and Paper I) plus Descriptive (Paper II).
