BHU Chemistry Multi-Post Recruitment 2026: Overview
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is building a project team in its Department of Chemistry, Institute of Science for two studies on air quality and airborne particles. The work supports monitoring under the National Clean Air Programme and a separate ambient-air project in the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The roles combine laboratory science, field sampling, computing and data work, so this notice has options for candidates from school-level technical training through postgraduate science.
The team will work under the supervision of Dr Kirpa Ram on projects that examine inhalable microplastics and common air pollutants. These are temporary, project-linked appointments, making them best suited to candidates who want hands-on experience with environmental measurements, scientific instruments and real monitoring data.
Posts and Disciplines
- Technical Assistant: supports the inhalable-microplastics study through air-pollution monitoring, chemical characterisation, source-apportionment work, modelling and scientific data handling.
- Junior Research Fellow: works on chemistry and atmospheric or environmental science questions, using analytical tools and open datasets for research under the project.
- Scientific Assistant: handles aerosol sampling, data interpretation and record keeping for monitoring work in Patna, Prayagraj and other project cities when needed.
- Field Assistant: manages routine ambient-air and aerosol sampling at monitoring locations in Varanasi and keeps field equipment ready for use.
Post-wise Duties
Technical Assistant
You will support air-pollution and microplastics monitoring, help operate instruments and organise the resulting datasets. The work also includes analysis, modelling support and clear project reports, with programming knowledge useful for handling larger datasets.
Junior Research Fellow
You will take part in research on atmospheric and environmental chemistry, extract information from open data sources and analyse it using suitable software. Familiarity with R, Python, ArcGIS or QGIS can help you contribute to both scientific analysis and mapping.
Scientific Assistant
You will carry out aerosol and ambient-air sampling, interpret monitoring data and maintain dependable project records. The assignment may involve work in several cities, so you should be comfortable supporting field campaigns away from the main laboratory.
Field Assistant
You will help run sampling equipment at Varanasi monitoring sites, check basic electrical connections and assist with the collection of usable field samples. Practical familiarity with samplers or earlier pollution-monitoring work will make the daily routine easier.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project tenure: Each appointment is purely temporary and ends with the relevant project.
- Project preference: when candidates are otherwise equally placed, the notice says SC or ST candidates will receive preference in line with Government of India rules.
- Interview communication: shortlisted applicants will hear by email about an online or in-person interview; no printed interview letter will be posted.
- Travel support: the university will not pay TA or DA if you attend an in-person interview.
- Field mobility: some monitoring work may take you to Patna, Prayagraj and other project cities, while the field-assistant work is centred on Varanasi.
Application Submission Notes
You may send the plain-paper application and supporting material to Dr Kirpa Ram, Principal Investigator, Department of Chemistry, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005, or email it to aecllabkr@gmail.com. The notice prefers the role-specific Google Forms: Technical Assistant, Junior Research Fellow, Scientific Assistant and Field Assistant. Choose the form for the role you want; the combined notice does not provide one common application link.
Responsibilities
- Collect ambient-air and aerosol samples at assigned monitoring sites
- Operate sampling and laboratory instruments safely during project work
- Record field observations and keep project datasets organised
- Analyse pollution data using suitable statistical or mapping software
- Prepare clear tables, interpretations and reports for the research team
- Check samplers, basic electrical connections and field supplies before visits
- Support chemical characterisation, source apportionment and modelling tasks
