BITM Junior Mentor Recruitment 2026: Overview

Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM), a unit of the National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture, is engaging Junior Mentors for Innovation Hubs in Kolkata, Digha, Purulia and Patna. The hubs work under the Scheme for Promoting Innovation, Creativity and Engagement of Science (SPICES), which gives young learners a place to test ideas, build models and develop investigative projects. This is a fixed-term engagement linked to the working needs of those hubs, not a regular museum appointment.

The role suits someone who enjoys turning scientific ideas into hands-on learning. You would support students and members as their projects move from a rough concept to experiments, prototypes and records. The notice places particular weight on practical curiosity, comfort with laboratory or workshop activity, and the ability to guide learners without taking over their work.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Electronics at BITM, Kolkata: You would work with learners using the Innovation Hub attached to the main museum and help connect electronic projects with public science engagement.
  • Electronics at Digha Science Centre: This placement supports hands-on electronics activity at the Digha hub and may involve weekend interaction when student members are available.
  • Electronics and Life Sciences at District Science Centre, Purulia: The two discipline streams serve different project interests while sharing the same Innovation Hub setting.
  • Electronics or Physics at Shrikrishna Science Centre, Patna: This opening can be matched to either discipline, so your academic and practical background will guide the fit.

Across the centres, Junior Mentors work under the Chief Mentor and coordinate with laboratories or other institutions when a project needs specialist facilities. You may also help keep instruments ready, track the progress of activities and prepare clear updates on the work being done.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Contract term: The first engagement is for one year. An extension is possible only when the hub still needs the role, both sides agree and your performance is satisfactory.
  • Working schedule: The notice sets a full weekly workload that includes Saturdays and Sundays. Innovation Hub activity can also take place during school holidays and vacations because that is when many student members are free.
  • Extra project time: Some investigations may need additional days or hours. The notice does not provide extra payment for this project-related time.
  • Centre-based engagement: Your work is tied to the Innovation Hub at the centre that selects you, so choose the walk-in venue that matches the placement and discipline you want.

Application Submission Notes

This is a walk-in personal interaction, so there is no separate online form. Use the application form attached to the official notice and report to the relevant BITM, Digha, Purulia or Patna venue at 9:00 am; the interaction begins from 11:00 am, and late reporting after that time is not accepted.

Carry your completed form, a valid identity proof and the relevant certificates in original form with one photocopy set. The four venue addresses are printed in the notice, including BITM at 19A Gurusaday Road, Kolkata; Digha Science Centre at Fore Shore Road; District Science Centre on North Lake Road, Purulia; and Shrikrishna Science Centre at West Gandhi Maidan, Patna.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Mentor with Innovation Hub programmes and learner projects
  • Guide students and members through investigative, design and model-making activities
  • Manage the daily work of the assigned Innovation Hub or laboratory
  • Monitor project progress and prepare clear activity reports
  • Maintain instruments and gadgets used for Innovation Hub work
  • Coordinate with outside institutions or laboratories when experiments need support
  • Work with student members on weekends and holidays when required
