Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) is appointing Post-Doctoral Fellows in the CARBON Laboratory of its Department of Chemical Engineering. The time-bound research appointments support two battery-material projects funded by ANRF and Coal India Limited. One track focuses on tropical battery materials and fabrication, while the other turns low-grade coal into graphitic carbon for lithium-ion cells. This is hands-on translational research, with laboratory work expected to move from material design to cell demonstration.

Posts and Disciplines

• Tropical battery materials: This track covers lithium-sulphur battery chemistry, electrode-material design, electrochemical testing and the fabrication technologies needed for battery demonstration.
• Coal-derived graphitic carbon: This track combines coal processing with lithium-ion battery chemistry, material characterisation, electrochemical studies and pouch-cell demonstration.

Post-wise Duties

Tropical Battery Materials Fellow

You will design and test electrode materials for the lithium-sulphur battery track, plan repeatable experiments and connect electrochemical results with changes in material design. The work also involves moving promising laboratory methods towards larger-scale fabrication and demonstration.

Coal Conversion and Lithium-ion Fellow

You will study routes for converting low-grade coal into graphitic carbon for lithium-ion batteries, characterise the resulting materials and evaluate them in coin cells and pouch cells. You will also help refine processing conditions so that the research can progress towards material upscaling.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Project tenure: The fellowship begins as a fixed-term project appointment and may be extended when performance and project needs support continuation.
• Experience preference: Prior work relevant to the advertised battery research will receive preference during shortlisting.
• Joining: The selected researcher is expected to join promptly after the final decision.
• Suitability clause: The laboratory may keep a position open when the selection committee does not find a suitable researcher.
