WII Project Associate Recruitment 2026: Overview
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, is hiring project staff for six field research projects under its second Recruitment and Placement Cell advertisement of October 2026. The work ranges from wildlife impact studies of irrigation, mining and drinking-water schemes to a conservation plan for the critically endangered White-bellied Heron and biodiversity surveys in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Every post is a contractual project position that ends with its project. If you are a wildlife biologist, ecologist, GIS analyst or social scientist looking for real field experience, this drive is worth a close look. Only Indian nationals can apply.
Posts and Disciplines
- Morand-Ganjal Irrigation Project study: a Senior Project Associate, a Project Associate II (RS and GIS) and a Project Associate I will assess how the irrigation project affects wildlife and draft a mitigation plan. This is the shortest project, at six months.
- White-bellied Heron conservation plan: a Project Associate I for surveys of the heron and its habitat in the Lohit and Noa-Dehing river basins.
- Sijimali Bauxite Mines wildlife plan: an Administrative Assistant supporting the site-specific management plan for the Rayagada and Kalahandi (South) forest divisions in Odisha. This is the only post open to graduates of any discipline.
- Yettinahole Drinking Water Project: a Principal Project Associate and Project Associate I posts preparing the wildlife mitigation and management plan for Hassan and Tumkur districts in Karnataka.
- Saranda Forest biodiversity monitoring: Project Associate I posts in three specialisations, Vegetation, Social and Entomology, in West Singhbhum, Jharkhand. The Social post is open to social science graduates from Environmental Management, Social Work, Anthropology, Economics or Sustainable Development.
- Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve: a Project Associate I for biodiversity and floristic surveys under a centrally sponsored MoEFCC scheme.
Post-wise Duties
Principal and Senior Project Associate
You will manage the field team, plan and run surveys, and own the data analysis and report writing for the project. Experience with spatial ecological modelling in R and papers in peer-reviewed journals count in your favour.
Project Associate II (RS and GIS)
You will handle the remote sensing and GIS analysis for the Morand-Ganjal study and write up the findings.
Project Associate I
You will work with the field teams on surveys, sampling and data analysis. The Saranda posts are specialised: the Vegetation post collects habitat and vegetation data, the Entomology post runs pan trapping, light trapping and lab work on specimens, and the Social post conducts surveys in tribal-dominated areas. The Nanda Devi post means surveys in remote Himalayan terrain plus literature review and reporting.
Administrative Assistant
You will give the Principal Investigator administrative and logistics support, from office work to coordinating field teams and surveys.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project tenure: All posts are temporary and are abolished when the project ends. The Saranda and Nanda Devi posts may be extended if funding continues.
- Two posts at most: You can apply for up to two positions that match your degree, with a separate online form, documents and fee for each.
- Current and former WII staff: If you already work on a WII project or are a PhD scholar, attach a recent No Objection Certificate from your supervisor. Former WII staff must upload a No Dues certificate.
- Lower-grade offer: The interview committee may recommend you for a lower-grade position if you are not found suitable for the post you applied for.
- Physical fitness: The Nanda Devi post needs good physical fitness for fieldwork in remote Himalayan areas.
- Non-refundable fee: The application or processing fee is not refunded, even if your application is rejected or you withdraw.
- Online interview: Shortlisted candidates are interviewed online; the shortlist and results appear in the Latest News and Announcements section of the WII website.
