The UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research (UGC-DAE CSR) is an autonomous institution set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. It has its headquarters in Indore and centres in Indore, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Kalpakkam, plus a node at Bhubaneshwar. Each centre is headed by a Centre Director. UGC-DAE CSR has now invited applications for the post of Centre Director at its Mumbai Centre under Advertisement No. 08-2026. This is a top scientific leadership role for an expert in condensed matter physics and materials science.

About the Mumbai Centre

The Mumbai Centre helps universities and colleges across India by giving them access to advanced research facilities. It provides specialised training on in-house characterisation tools and opens up neutron diffraction studies using the Dhruva Reactor at BARC to university scientists.

Through the centre, researchers can use several world-class BARC facilities, including:

• Nuclear Analytical, Positron and Spectroscopic facilities
• Pulse Magnetic Field and Electromagnetic Welding facilities
• Material Science and Characterization facilities
• Accelerator-related facilities

Research students from across the country use these facilities, and the centre's scientists work in the frontier areas of condensed matter physics and materials science, guiding both their own PhD students and visiting scholars.

Who Can Apply?

• Research Standing: You should be a researcher of high standing and reputation, with journal publications showing strong independent research work.
• Experience: You must have at least 20 years of research experience after your PhD.
• Current Position: You must currently hold a position at Pay Level 13 or an equivalent pay scale.
• Subject Expertise: You should be an expert in condensed matter physics and materials science.
• Citizenship: You must be an Indian citizen.

Age Limit

• You should preferably be below 55 years of age as on 12 June 2026.

Salary

• The post is in Pay Level 14 with allowances as per the rules.
• The gross salary at the minimum of the scale is Rs. 2,85,500 per month (inclusive of all allowances).

Selection Process

Selection is based on your research record and standing in condensed matter physics and materials science:

1. Screening of Application: Your research experience, current pay level, and academic standing are checked against the eligibility conditions.
2. Assessment of Research Record: Your journal publications and independent research activities are reviewed.
3. Interview / Final Selection: Shortlisted candidates are assessed for the leadership role of Centre Director.

In absentia, applications from any person will not be considered.
