Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB) has announced a fresh recruitment drive for 532 posts of Jail Warder (Male) and Matron (Female) in the Director General, Jail Police (Jails), Punjab, Chandigarh. Out of these, 475 posts are for Jail Warder (Male only) and 57 posts are for Matron (Female only). Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification

  • Minimum Qualification: You must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized Education Board or University.
  • Punjabi Language: You must have studied Punjabi as a compulsory or elective subject at Matriculation level, or passed any other equivalent examination with Punjabi language as specified by the Government.

Gender Requirement

  • Warder posts: Only male candidates can apply.
  • Matron posts: Only female candidates can apply.

Domicile

  • Reservation benefit is available only to residents of Punjab.
  • You need a Punjab Domicile/Residence Certificate to claim reservation. This certificate is required from every candidate (male or female) regardless of category, and it should not be older than 5 years at the time of application.

Age Limit

Age is calculated as on the date specified in the detailed notification. For the previous Advt 07/2025, the reference date was 01 January 2025.

For Warder (Male)

  • General: 18 to 27 years
  • SC and Backward Classes of Punjab: Upper age limit is 32 years
  • Pensioned soldiers of armed forces (40 years): Up to 40 years
  • Men resigned from armed forces after 3 years service: Up to 30 years
  • Men with 5+ years in police force: Up to 30 years
  • Army reserve man: Up to 35 years
  • Government employees of Punjab and Central Govt: Up to 45 years

For Matron (Female)

  • General: 18 to 27 years
  • SC and Backward Classes of Punjab: Upper age limit is 32 years
  • Widows, divorced women, women deserted for 2+ years: Up to 35 years
  • Government employees of Punjab and Central Govt: Up to 45 years

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get a salary of Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200 per month under Level 2 (L-2) of the 7th Central Pay Commission / Pay Matrix.
  • The minimum admissible pay is Rs. 19,900 per month as recommended by the in-house committee.
  • You will also receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA) and other allowances as admissible by the Punjab State Government.
  • The approximate in-hand salary comes to around Rs. 30,000-35,000 per month after adding allowances.

Physical Standards

For Warder (Male Candidates)

  • Minimum Height: 5 feet 7 inches (5 feet 4.5 inches for Dogras and Gurkhas)
  • Chest: 33 inches unexpanded and 34.5 inches expanded
  • Vision: Normal in both eyes with or without spectacles (must not be colour blind)

For Matron (Female Candidates)

  • Minimum Height: 5 feet 3 inches
  • Minimum Weight: 50 kg and above
  • Vision: Normal in both eyes with or without spectacles (must not be colour blind)

Application Fee

  • General / Freedom Fighter / Sportsperson: Rs. 1,000
  • SC / BC / EWS / Other Reserved Categories: Rs. 250
  • Ex-Servicemen (Self & Dependent): Rs. 200

Note: The fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances. Candidates can pay the fee only once, and it is non-transferable.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in the following stages:

  1. Written Exam (Objective Type - MCQ): This is the main scoring exam. You will face Multiple Choice Questions on General Knowledge, Basic Law and Constitution, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, Computer Knowledge, and English Language.
  2. Punjabi Language Qualifying Test: This is a qualifying exam as per Punjab Government notification dated 28.10.2022. You need to score at least 50% marks to qualify. Marks from this paper are not added to the final merit.
  3. Physical Measurement Test (PMT): Your height, chest (for males), and weight (for females) will be measured against the prescribed standards.
  4. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): You will be tested on physical activities like running, shot put, and rope climbing.
  5. Document Verification: You need to present original documents including educational certificates, age proof, domicile certificate, category certificates, and photographs.
  6. Medical Examination: A thorough medical checkup will be conducted to ensure you meet the health standards for the post.

Responsibilities

  • Guard and supervise inmates inside the jail premises during assigned shifts
  • Maintain discipline and order among prisoners at all times
  • Escort prisoners to and from courts, hospitals, and other locations
  • Conduct regular headcounts and security checks within the jail
  • Prevent smuggling of contraband items into the prison
  • Report any suspicious activity, fights, or escape attempts to senior officers immediately
  • Assist in the rehabilitation and welfare programs organized for inmates
  • Maintain daily logs, registers, and records as per jail department guidelines

Exam Pattern

The written exam consists of two papers. Paper 1 is a Punjabi Language qualifying test where you need at least 50% marks to pass. Marks from Paper 1 are not counted towards your final merit.
