Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Stenographer (Grade-I) Recruitment 2026 - 21 Posts

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs to control drug trafficking in India, has issued a vacancy circular to fill 21 Stenographer (Grade-I) posts on deputation. This is an open, rolling vacancy circular — there is no single closing date, and applications received by the last day of each month are considered for that month's selection round. Only Central Government employees already working as a Stenographer can apply through their department; this is not for freshers or private-sector candidates.

NCB was created to enforce the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and coordinate drug-control action across state police, customs and other central agencies. Working here on deputation gives you hands-on exposure to India's anti-narcotics machinery, while your parent-cadre lien stays protected — once your deputation tenure ends, you go back to your parent department.

You could be posted to any of these locations after selection:

  • Delhi, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Raipur, Dehradun
  • Gorakhpur, Agartala, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar
  • Siliguri, Amritsar, Jammu, Srinagar, Cochin
  • Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Bangalore, Goa, Bhopal, Indore, Jaipur

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must be a Central Government employee currently holding an analogous Stenographer post on a regular basis in your parent department.
  • OR Experience: You have 6 years' regular service in Level-5 (Rs. 29,200-92,300) of the pay matrix or an equivalent grade.
  • OR Experience: You have 10 years' regular service in Level-4 (Rs. 25,500-81,100) of the pay matrix or an equivalent grade.
  • In simple terms, you should already be doing similar stenography work in a Central Government office to be considered for this deputation.
  • Note: Applications must be forwarded through the proper channel (your parent department/cadre) — you cannot apply directly online.

Age Limit

  • You must be not more than 56 years old as on the closing date of receipt of your application.

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get Level-6 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix (Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 per month) — pre-revised Pay Band-2 Rs. 9,300-34,800 plus Grade Pay Rs. 4,200, Group 'B' Non-Gazetted.
  • You will also get DA, HRA, TA and other allowances as per Central Government rules.
  • The deputation period is normally up to 3 years, extendable to a maximum of 7 years based on suitability and performance.

Selection Process

Since this is a deputation posting, there is no written exam. NCB screens the applications and supporting documents forwarded by your parent department:

  1. Document Screening: NCB checks your APAR grading for the last 5 years, Integrity Certificate, Vigilance Clearance Certificate and Major/Minor Penalty Statement.
  2. Selection by NCB: Based on your service record and the eligibility criteria, NCB selects officers for the available vacancies at the end of each month.

How to Apply

  1. Prepare your Curriculum Vitae (CV) in the format prescribed by NCB.
  2. Attach your APAR gradings for the last 5 years (your annual performance record, which must show a minimum 'Good' benchmark with no adverse remarks), Integrity Certificate, Vigilance Clearance Certificate, and Major/Minor Penalty Statement for the last 10 years.
  3. Get a Cadre Clearance Certificate from your department confirming you will be relieved to join NCB on deputation, if selected.
  4. Send your complete application through the proper channel (your Head of Department) so it reaches the Assistant Director (P&E), Narcotics Control Bureau, 2nd Floor, August Kranti Bhawan, Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi-110066.
  5. Applications received by the last day of each month are considered for that month's selection round.
