The Government of Maharashtra (Law and Judiciary Department) is hiring law officers for appointment at the High Court of Judicature at Bombay, Mumbai. The Government in Law and Judiciary Department, Mantralaya, Mumbai, has invited applications in the prescribed form from eligible candidates for appointment as Law Officers at three benches of the Bombay High Court — Original Side, Appellate Side, and Appellate Side (Writ Cell). The appointments are purely on temporary basis and terminable at any time, governed by the Code of Civil Procedure 1908, Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, and Rule 11, 12, 13 & 30 of the Maharashtra Law Officers (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Remuneration) Rules, 1984. Experienced advocates practising in the Bombay High Court can apply for the post matching their experience.
Vacancy Breakdown
Posts are being filled at three benches of the Bombay High Court:
- High Court (Original Side), Mumbai: Assistant Government Pleader + Additional Government Pleader
- High Court (Appellate Side), Mumbai: Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor + Additional Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor
- High Court, Appellate Side (Writ Cell), Mumbai: Assistant Government Pleader + Additional Government Pleader
Number of posts at each bench will be decided by the Department after scrutiny of applications. Vacancies have not been specified in the notice.
Who Can Apply?
For Additional Government Pleader / Additional GP & Additional Public Prosecutor
- Citizenship: You must be a Citizen of India
- Qualification: Law degree from any recognised university and enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa
- Practice: At least 10 years of practice as an Advocate ordinarily in the High Court on the date of advertisement, certified by the Registrar of the High Court or Prothonotary & Senior Master
For Assistant Government Pleader / Assistant GP & Additional Public Prosecutor
- Citizenship: You must be a Citizen of India
- Qualification: Law degree from any recognised university and enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa
- Practice: At least 7 years of practice as an Advocate ordinarily in the High Court on the date of advertisement
Age Limit
- For Additional Government Pleader posts: Maximum age 58 years on the date of advertisement. Upper limit relaxed up to 2 years for applicants working as Government Pleader / Additional Government Pleader / Public Prosecutor / Additional Public Prosecutor in the High Court on the date of advertisement.
- For Assistant Government Pleader posts: Maximum age 55 years on the date of advertisement. Upper limit relaxed up to 5 years for applicants working as Assistant Government Pleaders in the High Court on the date of advertisement.

Salary
- Pay and allowances will be paid as per Rule 11, 12, 13 & 30 of the Maharashtra Law Officers (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Remuneration) Rules, 1984.

Selection Process
Selection will be done in these stages:
- Application Scrutiny: The Law and Judiciary Department will scrutinise applications and shortlist eligible candidates
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for personal interview
- Document Verification: Original certificates and HC practice certificate from Registrar/Prothonotary will be verified
The Government of Maharashtra reserves the right to shortlist the number of eligible candidates for interview after scrutiny of applications.

- Download the prescribed application proforma from the Government website www.maharashtra.gov.in or the Law and Judiciary Department website lj.maharashtra.gov.in.
- Fill in all mandatory fields in BLOCK CAPITAL LETTERS and affix a recent passport-size photograph with signature.
- Attach self-attested photocopies of degree certificates, SANAD (Bar Council enrolment), and a Character Certificate from any two Senior Advocates/Senior Counsels.
- If applying for Additional Government Pleader posts, enclose the practice certificate from the Registrar of the High Court (or Prothonotary & Senior Master).
- Submit separate applications in separate envelopes for each post you apply for. Mention "Application for ____ (post name) and ____ (side)" clearly on the envelope.
- Send the application to: Registry, Law and Judiciary Department, Room No. 345, 3rd Floor, Annex Building, Mantralaya, Mumbai-400032. The application shall be addressed to the Principal Secretary & RLA, Law & Judiciary Department, Mumbai.
- Application must reach the office on or before 19 June 2026 by 06:15 PM during office hours.
Applications sent to any other place or by any other mode shall not be accepted. Incomplete, illegible, or unsigned applications will be rejected summarily.

Responsibilities
- Represent the Government of Maharashtra in civil and criminal cases at the Bombay High Court
- Draft pleadings, affidavits, written submissions, and legal notices for the State
- Argue cases before single benches and division benches of the High Court
- Conduct prosecution in criminal appeals and writ petitions for Additional Public Prosecutor roles
- Advise government departments on legal matters and policy implementation
- Maintain case records, attend hearings on time, and report progress to the Law Department
- Follow the Maharashtra Law Officers Rules, 1984, and standards of professional conduct set by the Bar Council
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Law degree (LL.B) from any recognised university and enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa
Preferred Qualification
Experience in handling civil and criminal matters in the Bombay High Court
Required Skills
Drafting of pleadings, courtroom advocacy, legal research, prosecution practice
