Medical Education Department Kerala — Assistant Professor in General Surgery Recruitment 2026
The Medical Education Department under the Government of Kerala has notified 1 vacancy for the post of Assistant Professor in General Surgery through Kerala Public Service Commission (Category No. 14/2026). This is an NCA vacancy earmarked for the Viswakarma community which arose from the Ranked List published on 05.09.2024 (Cat No. 345/2023, Gazette dated 16.10.2023). The NCA Ranked List will remain valid until the vacancy is filled. Only candidates from the Viswakarma community can apply — applications from other communities will be rejected without any communication.
Who Can Apply?
Educational Qualification
- Qualification: You need an MS or DNB in General Surgery from a recognised institution.
- Experience: At least 1 year experience as Senior Resident in General Surgery in a recognised Medical College after completing your Post Graduate Degree.
- Registration: You must have Permanent Registration under the Kerala State Medical Council (Travancore Cochin Medical Council — TCMC) or Council for Modern Medicine.
Alternative Qualifications (Any One)
You can also apply if you meet any of these alternative criteria:
- Tutor experience: Experience as a Tutor in a medical institution in the concerned subject with a Post Graduate Degree is treated as equivalent to Senior Resident experience.
- Demonstrator with MSc + Ph.D: Experience as a Demonstrator in a medical institution with MSc and Ph.D Degree in the concerned subject counts as equivalent to Senior Resident experience.
- Armed Forces Specialist: Specialist Medical Officers of the Armed Forces with at least 1 year teaching experience or 2 years clinical experience after PG Degree.
- Non-teaching Consultant/Specialist: Medical Officers with PG Medical Degree and at least 2 years of experience in a Government Hospital with minimum 220 beds — no Senior Resident experience needed. Must complete Basic Course in Biomedical Research within 2 years of appointment.
- Diploma holders (appointed before 08.06.2017): Senior Residents in a recognised medical institution before 08.06.2017 with 4 years total experience.
- Diploma holders (Specialist/Medical Officer): Working in a Government Medical Institution running NMC-recognised teaching programme with cumulative 6 years experience.
Community Requirement
- Community: You must belong to the Viswakarma community of Kerala State. This is an NCA (Non-Community Appointment) recruitment exclusively for this community.
Note: Qualifications are as per NMC Regulations 2025, Medical Institutions (Qualification of Faculty) Regulations, 2025 dated 30.06.2025.
Age Limit
- Minimum age: 22 years
- Maximum age: 50 years
- You must have been born between 02.01.1976 and 01.01.2004 (both dates included).
- Age Relaxation: Available as per Part II, Para 2 of the General Conditions (except Para 2(i)) of the Kerala PSC Gazette notification.
Salary
- Pay scale is as per UGC norms under the 7th Central Pay Commission.
- For medical Assistant Professors, the pay is typically at Academic Level 12 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.
- You will also get DA, HRA, NPA (Non-Practising Allowance, if applicable), and other allowances as per Kerala Government rules.

- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in General Surgery as per the approved curriculum
- Handle surgical procedures and patient care in the assigned Government Medical College hospital
- Assist senior faculty during complex surgeries and emergency operations
- Prepare lesson plans, clinical case studies, and examination question papers
- Evaluate students through assessments, practical exams, and clinical postings
- Conduct research and publish papers in recognised medical journals
- Participate in academic committees, hospital administration, and departmental activities
