IITR JRF Mechanical Engineering Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in its Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The fellow will work under the principal investigator Prof. Indra Vir Singh on a research project sponsored by the Armament Research Board, DRDO, Delhi.

The project is titled Effect of Hygroscopic Ageing on the Mechanical and Fracture-Fatigue Behaviour of Sandwich Composites for Armament Applications. In simple words, the team wants to find out how moisture ageing weakens sandwich composites built on Nomex, PMI foam and PVC foam cores, and how their fracture and fatigue behaviour changes. This is a contractual project position that runs with the three-year project, so it suits you best if you have a mechanical, production or aerospace background and want hands-on experimental research with a defence sponsor.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Nationality: Only Indian nationals can apply.
• Tenure: The position is tied to the three-year DRDO project and ends with it.
• PhD route: The selected fellow gets a chance to pursue a PhD; once the project is over, the PhD candidate receives the MHRD fellowship as per institute policy.
• GATE: Candidates who have qualified GATE will be preferred.
• Reservation note: SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal.
• Check your eligibility first: You must make sure you meet the conditions before the interview; only shortlisted candidates hear back by email.
• Online interview: The interview is held online on Webex or Google Meet, so you do not need to travel to Roorkee for it.

The email must reach the principal investigator by 5 PM on the last date. The interview date is shared later by email, only with shortlisted candidates.

• Prepare and characterise Nomex, PMI foam and PVC foam core sandwich composite specimens
• Carry out hygroscopic ageing of specimens and check their moisture resistance
• Test the mechanical properties of aged and unaged composite samples
• Study delamination behaviour under Mode-I and Mode-II loading
• Assess fatigue performance of aged samples and benchmark it against unaged composites
